Notes: Summary A patient with the diagnosis of enchondromatosis (Ollier's disease) presented with seizures. CT examination showed an avascular right frontal lobe lesion. Surgery revealed a histologically verified grade II astrocytoma. This case is consistent with recent evidence that questions the distinction between the two forms of enchondromatosis (Ollier's disease and Maffucci's syndrome). Maffucci's syndrome is associated with a high rate of malignancy, including intracranial gliomas. Olliver's disease has not been associated with malignant change, other than sarcomatous transformation of the enchondromas. However, Ollier's disease and Maffucci's syndrome may be a spectrum of the same disease process, and therefore patients with diagnosed Ollier's disease are at a higher risk for malignancy than has been previously recognized.

Notes: It is shown how the stress field due to any prescribed continuous distribution of dislocation dipoles can be determined. This technique then forms the basis of a general method of solution of elasto-plastic material problems. The presentation is limited to situations which conform to either plane stress or strain conditions. Some results are obtained for relatively simple geometrical and loading configurations and compared with classical plasticity solutions. Finally, the method is applied to the problem of a circular hole in a finite strip under tension.

Notes: Advances in technology and interest in limit state design have made the inclusion of non-linear effects, such as elasto-plastic behaviour, desirable in the analysis of many structures. Improvements in solution algorithms coupled with parallel developments in high speed digital computers have now made the practical solution of such problems possible. The paper presents numerical solutions to three-dimensional elasto-plastic problems illustrating the applicability of isoparametric elements and the order of computation times involved.

Notes: This paper presents a thin plate element formulated along parallel lines to the general three-dimensional Semiloof shell element. This plate version possesses only one half of the total number of degrees-of-freedom of the shell element and has the advantqage that the formulation of the strains and other terms is very much simplified. The element is first assessed in static situations and then its performance in the solution of eigenvalue problems is considered.

Notes: To account for plastic deformation in plate and shell structures an elasto-viscoplastic solution algorithm is considered based on Perzyna's model for material behaviour. This algorithm can be employed to solve for time-dependent elasto-viscoplastic situations and by allowing steady-state conditions to be reached, elasto-plastic problems can also be considered. For the large displacement elasto-viscoplastic analysis of thin shells, an incremental stiffness procedure is employed together with a Lagrangian description of the stress and strain vectors. The Semiloof plate and shell elements are used for finite element space discretization. The procedures developed are applied to the solution of several numerical examples and the solutions compared with results from other sources where available.

Notes: An elasto-plastic analysis of anisotropic plates and shells is undertaken by means of the finite element displacement method. A thick shell formulation accounting for shear deformation is considered, which is based on a degenerate three-dimensional continuum element. The accommodation of variable material properties, not only along the surface of the structure but also through the thickness, is made possible by a discrete layered approach. Although isoparametric elements of the Serendipity family give satisfactory solutions for thick and moderately thin shells the results exhibit ‘locking’ for an increasing ratio of span to thickness. To develop a numerical model which is applicable to thick or thin plates and shells, the nine-node Lagrangian element and the Heterosis element are also introduced into the present model. Plastic yielding is based on the Huber-Mises yield surface extended by Hill for anisotropic materials. The yield function is generalized by introducing anisotropic parameters of plasticity which are updated during the material strain hardening history. Numerical examples are presented and compared with available solutions. The effects of anisotropy on these solutions are also discussed.

Notes: This paper considers a layered thick shell finite element procedure for determining the dynamic transient nonlinear response of plates and shells. The degenerated three-dimensional isoparametric shell element with independent rotational and translational degrees-of-freedom is employed and a layered formulation is adopted to represent the steel reinforcement and to simulate progressive concrete cracking through the thickness. The dynamic yielding function is assumed to be a function of the current strain rate, in addition to being total plastic strain or work dependent. The concrete model also simulates both compressive crushing and tensile cracking behaviours and an implicit Newmark algorithm is employed for time integration of the equations of motion. Several numerical examples are presented for both slab and shell structures and the results obtained compared with those from other sources wherever available.

Notes: In this work, the plastic stress-strain relation and the incremental elastoplastic stiffness matrix for materials obeying the principal stress yield criterion are derived in the context of the associated theory of plasticity. Particular attention is paid to the treatment of the singularity conditions associated with this yield criterion.

Notes: A least square based finite element algorithm is developed for some elasto-static problems. In the formulation both stresses and displacements appear as simultaneous variables. In two dimensional (plane) analysis, parabolie isoparametric elements are used. Considerable improvement of performance is obtained with a numerical integration based on 2 × 2 Gauss point distribution over more accurate integration schemes. Reasons for this are presented. The formulation is extended in the section ‘General least square formulation’ to beams and plates with a similar success of ‘reduced’ integration.
