Notes: Abstract The effects of binding calcium ions to the double helical forms of gramicidin present in methanol solution were examined using circular dichroism (CD) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies. It was found that calcium ions principally alter the relative composition of the equilibrium mixture of gramicidin conformers present in the solvent. In the absence of calcium, both parallel and antiparallel double helices are present. However, the addition of small amounts of Ca2+ shifts the equilibrium towards the left-handed parallel double helical form. This conformational change prevents monovalent cations (caesiums) from binding to the gramicidin double helix, and even converts the shorter, wider anti-parallel double helical form normally produced in the presence of caesium into the longer, narrower parallel double helical form. Furthermore, a temperature study showed that calcium ions tend to stabilize this form relative to the ion-free forms. The conformation of gramicidin is further changed, becoming a disordered structure, when the concentration of Ca2+ is raised. Thus, the binding of divalent calcium ions has a number of dramatic effects on the conformations of gramicidin present in solution.

Notes: Abstract Control design of nonlinear discrete-time uncertain systems with (possibly fast) uncertain parameters is considered. We study the effect of only partially compensating the uncertainty. The optimal choice of a design parameter, which indicates the amount of compensation, is recommended.

Notes: Abstract Robust control designs for a discrete Takagi and Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model are proposed. The T-S fuzzy model contains (possibly fast) time-varying uncertainty. First, a switching-type robust control is shown to stabilize the T-S fuzzy model asymptotically. Second, a saturation-type robust control is shown to render the T-S model practically stable. In both designs, only the bound of uncertainty is needed. The effectiveness of proposed designs is analyzed rigorously and illustrated by simulations.

Notes: Abstract We consider a class of large-scale uncertain delay systems. The uncertain parameter vector in the system is possibly fast time-varying. It may be nonlinear in the system dynamics. No statistical or fuzzy information of the uncertainty is known. Based on only the possible bound of the uncertain parameter, a decentralized linear robust control is proposed, which renders the system asymptotically stable.

Notes: The pulse-spectrum technique (PST), an iterative numerical algorithm, is presented and extended to solve the inverse problems arising from the dynamic structural identification and structural design problems. A simple one-dimensional shear beam model is used to demonstrate the applicability of PST. Numerical simulations are carried out to test the feasibility and to study the general characteristics of this technique without the real measurement and design data. It is found that the PST is not only quite robust in providing accurate results but also an excellent numerical method according to the four practical criteria for evaluating numerical methods.

Notes: A fundamental field for the edge crack problem is suggested, and the field is composed of the singular displacement field and the complementary regular field. The boundary displacement of the fundamental field plays the role of the weight function in the edge crack problem. After multiplying the boundary traction in the physical problem with the weight function and performing integration along the boundary, the stress intensity factor at the crack tip is obtainable. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the use of the suggested weight function approach.
