Notes: Abstract Solvent extracts of individual pheromone glands were prepared from femaleHelicoverpa assulta (Guenée) at 2-hr intervals throughout the scotophase. The amounts of female sex pheromone components, (Z)-9-hexadecenal, (Z)-11-hexadecenal, (Z)-9-hexadecenyl acetate, and (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate, in the extracts were determined by gas chromatographic analysis. Although females called from early scotophase (2 hr) until late scotophase (6 hr) the quantity of extracted pheromone remained high at 8 hr, the end of the scotophase. More than 70% of the pheromone gland extracts contained sex pheromone components regardless of whether the donor females had been called or resting. Pheromone components were absent from gland extracts prepared at the onset of the scotophase. The quantity of (Z)-9-hexadecenal and (Z)-11-hexadecenal increased rapidly to reach a maximum of approximately 260 and 30 ng/female, respectively, that was maintained for up to 8 hr, the duration of the scotophase. The quantity of (Z)-9-hexadecenyl acetate and (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate increased continuously during the scotophase to peak at 600 and 30 ng/female, respectively, 8 hr into the scotophase. At the end of scotophase the quantity of all pheromone components decreased significantly.

Notes: The conventional staggered solution of pore fluid-soil interaction problems is shown to suffer from stability restriction. This paper presents a stabilized form of the staggered solution procedure of the problem. Computational overhead for this stabilization is shown to be modest and hence this stabilized procedure is recommended for production implementation for pore fluid-soil interaction analysis.

Notes: This paper is a user's guide for the stand-alone explicit direct time integration package STINT/CD for structural dynamics analysis. STINT/CD uses an automatic variable time increment central difference method. The purpose, function, limitations and usage of the package are described. A FORTRAN listing of STINT/CD is given along with a sample problem which illustrates its usage and performance.

Notes: The strain energy of straight beam members derived from the isoparametric shape functions is known to be invariant with respect to the number of integration points as long as they exceed a minimum number. However, this invariant property is generally lost for curved members. For example, the two-point integrated, membrane strain energy of curved beams by employing the quadratic shape functions is different from the three-point integrated one. This paper presents an invariant strain interpolation scheme for quadratic curved beam elements, which can lead to improved membrane representations in curved shell elements, thus resolving the perplexing membrane-bending coupling difficulties in thin shell analysis.

Notes: A semi-implicit direct time integration procedure is presented which avoids factorization of the implicit difference solution matrix. The procedure, if properly implemented, requires only vectorial calculations and hence needs the same computer core space as explicit integration procedures. Guidelines for splitting the stiffness matrix into upper and lower matrices are established, which among other things are designed to satisfy a correct transmission of rigid-body motions from element (or grid) to its adjacent elements.

Notes: A family of hierarchical algorithms for nonlinear structural equations are presented. The algorithms are based on the Davidenko-Branin type homotopy and shown to yield consistent hierarchical perturbation equations. The algorithms appear to be particularly suitable to problems involving bifurcation and limit point calculations. An important by-product of the algorithms is that they provide a systematic and economical means for computing the stepsize at each iteration stage when a Newton-like method is employed to solve the systems of equations. Some sample problems are provided to illustrate the characteristics of the algorithms.

Notes: Abstract Analysis of ovipositor washings from virgin femaleHelicoverpa assulta (Guenée) (Lepidoptere: Noctuidae) from Korea by gas chromatography (GC) linked to electroantennography and GC linked to mass spectrometry resulted in the identification of nine compounds, hexadecanal, (Z)-9-hexadecenal, (Z)-11-hexadecenal, hexadecyl acetate, (Z)-9-hexadecenyl acetate, (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate, hexadecan-l-ol, (Z)-9-hexadecen-l-ol, and (Z)-11-hexadecen-1-ol. However, ovipositor washings from females from Thailand contained mainly the 16-carbon aldehydes with very small amounts of (Z)-9-hexadecenyl acetate. Field tests conducted in Korea, China, and Thailand indicated that a binary blend of (Z)-9-hexadecenal and (Z)-11-hexadecenal was sufficient for attraction, although the most attractive ratio of compounds varied with location. In Korea a 20∶1 blend of compounds was the most attractive, while in Thailand a 7.5∶1 blend was most attractive. In China both blends of hexadecenal isomers were equally attractive. Addition of the hexadecenyl acetates to the 20∶1 blend of hexadecenals in the ratio of 1∶3.3 increased the trap catch of maleH. assulta compared to lures containing the aldehydes alone in Korea but reduced trap catch in China. Addition of the hexadecenyl acetates to the 7.5∶1 blend of hexadecenals had no significant effect on trap catch in Thailand or China compared to the aldehydes alone. The addition of the 16-carbon alcohols to the aldehydes had a significantly inhibitory effect in all three countries, suggesting they are not pheromone components. Taken together these results indicate thatH. assulta is polymorphic with at least two populations responding to different sex pheromones.

Notes: An algebraically partitioned FETI method for the solution of structural engineering problems on parallel computers is presented. The present algorithm consists of three attributes: an explicit generation of the orthogonal null-space matrix associated with the interface nodal forces, the floating subdomain rigid-body modes computed from the subdomain static equilibrium equation of the classical force method and the identification of redundant interface force constraint operator that emanates when the interface force computations are localized. Comparisons of the present method with the previously developed differentially partitioned FETI method are offered in terms of the saddle-point formulations at the end of the paper. A companion paper reports implementation details and numerical performance of the proposed algorithm. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: This paper deals with the application of a parametric quadratic programming (PQP) method to the numerical solution of large-deflection beams involving frictional contact constraints. The flexibility of the structure is modelled by an intrinsic spatial beam theory which is approximated by transverse-shear deformable linear beam elements. The linear complementary problem (LCP) without the penalty function resulting from PQP is made part of a Newton-Raphson search. The tool for solving the complementary equations is Lemke's algorithm, in which frictional contact conditions are enforced and new contact surfaces are updated during iteration. Applying the resulting contact element, a more accurate approximation of the contact point can be guaranteed, and the contact force can be directly computed by the adjacent beam elements. Three numerical examples are analysed to show the effectiveness and validity of the method.

Notes: A parallel partitioning scheme based on physical-co-ordinate variables is presented to systematically eliminate system constraint forces and yield the equations of motion of multibody dynamics systems in terms of their independent co-ordinates. Key features of the present scheme include an explicit determination of the independent co-ordinates, a parallel construction of the null space matrix of the constraint Jacobian matrix, an easy incorporation of the previously developed two-stage staggered solution procedure and a Schur complement based parallel preconditioned conjugate gradient numerical algorithm.
