    Notes: Two computer programs DOTIG1 and DOTIG2 were developed to calculate, in the time-domain, the interaction of transient electromagnetic pulses (EMP) with perfect electric conductor structures modelled by thin wires (DOTIG1) or patches (DOTIG2). DOTIG1 uses the electric field integral equation and DOTIG2 the magnetic field integral equation. Briefly described below are the numerical procedures used to develop both programs and some results that show their characteristics.

    Notes: Composite biomaterials with good mechanical response and a partially biodegradable character were prepared by the free radical polymerization of mixtures of α-Al2O3, low-molecular-weight but crystalline poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA), and methyl methacrylate (MMA). Cylindrical specimens prepared with different composition were characterized by thermogravimetry, calorimetry, 1H-NMR spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction (XRD). The in vitro biodegradative process was studied in different media, following variations of the pH, gravimetric weight loss of the specimens, and crystalline domain change by XRD after immersion in pure water and buffered solutions at pH 4.0 and pH 8.0 for 90 days. Formation of a relatively porous structure with good cohesion after the biodegradative treatment (confirmed by SEM) was observed. These systems can be considered for applications in orthopedic surgery as filling biomaterials and even as control drug-delivery systems. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The preparation, characterization, and in vitro release of Ibuprofen from Al2O3, poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA), and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) composites are described. The release process of the anti-inflammatory drug after the immersion of composites in a buffered solution is analyzed. The rate of Ibuprofen release is related to the crystalline or amorphous form of the drug. The presence of a ceramic component, α-Al2O3, and a biodegradable polymer, PLLA, facilitates both Ibuprofen crystallization and drug release. In addition, these composite systems modulate the release of the stereoisomers R(-) and S(+) of the drug. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Biomed Mater Res, 39, 423-428, 1998.

    Notes: Hip replacement implants fabricated using the ASTM F-75 alloy sometimes fail in a sudden catastrophic way. In general, fractures start at microstructural defects subjected to stress-corrosion under chemical attack by body fluids. In this paper the results of a study on the effect of casting parameters on the microstructure of ASTM F-75 are presented. The preheating mold temperature and the liquid temperature were varied between 900 and 1000°C, and 1410 and 1470°C, respectively. Optimum static strength and ductility were obtained when shrinkage microporosity and the volume fraction of M23C6 “eutectic” carbides precipitated at grain boundaries were minimized by increasing the preheating mold temperature to 1000°C and by using intermediate pouring temperatures of 1455°C. Under these casting conditions, however, the solidification rates are low, leading to large grain sizes, which, in turn, reduce the strength of the material under dynamic loading conditions. The volume fraction of the M23C6, “blocky” carbides appears to be independent of the casting conditions; however, their size and spatial distributions determine the strength of the as-cast alloys. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
