Notes: Summary Adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity in serum was estimated in 86 patients with intracranial tumours and 40 healthy volunteers. Although high ADA concentrations in biological fluids and tumour tissues were observed in several neoplastic conditions, there was no significant difference in the ADA in sera of brain tumour patients when compared to the control values. Therefore, cell-mediated immunity probably does not play a significant role in brain tumours.

Notes: Summary Immunoglobulin level in the sera of 62 patients with intracranial space occupying lesions was assayed using the radial immunodiffusion method. Serum IgM levels showed a highly significant increase in all types of brain tumour when compared to controls. Serum IgG levels were also increased in benign as well as malignant cases. Serum IgA levels were high only in benign cases. Hence, increased serum Ig levels may be of prognostic value in these cases.

Notes: Summary The levels of circulating immune complexes (CIC) were assayed in the sera of 109 patients with intracranial space occupying lesions. The CIC levels were significantly increased in all the brain tumours. After treatment, the CIC levels were still significantly increased when compared to the controls but showed no change when compared to their respective pre-operative values. Further, no change was observed in the CIC levels between the malignant and benign tumour case. Moreover, in brain tumours, 90% of the CIC precipitate consisted of IgG. However, the CIC levels fail to prognosticate the process of the disease in these patients.

Notes: A structural optimization problem is considered in which the design requirements include restrictions on the strength, stability, frequency and flutter characteristics of the structure. One of the central concerns of this phase of the work has been to overcome the problems inherent in analysing the dynamic and aeroelastic behaviour of structures with many degrees of freedom. The multiweb delta wing structure under supersonic flight conditions is the model upon which this exploratory study is based. The finite element idealization, with three different kinds of elements, is used to model the wing structure. The constant stress triangular plate elements, the rectangular shear panels and the pin-jointed bar elements are used to represent, respectively, the cover skins, webs and stringers of the wing structure. The design problem is formulated as a minimum weight optimization problem and is solved by using non-linear programming techniques. Computationally efficient schemes are developed for the necessary derivatives of the behaviour constraints. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the feasibility and the computational effectiveness of the method.

Notes: The problem of design of actively controlled structures subject to restrictions on the damping parameters of the closed-loop system is formulated and solved as a multiobjective optimization problem. The purpose of control is to effectively suppress structural vibrations due to initial excitation. The cross-sectional areas of the members are treated as design variables. The structural weight and the controlled system energy are considered as objective functions for minimization. The goal programming approach is used for the solution of the multiobjective optimization problems. The procedure is illustrated through numerical simulations using two-bar and twelve-bar truss structures.

Notes: It is recognized that there exists a vast amount of fuzzy information in both the objective and constraint functions of the optimum design of structures. Since most practical structural design problems involve several, often conflicting, objectives to be considered, a multi-objective fuzzy programming method is outlined in this work. The fuzzy constraints define a fuzzy feasible domain in the design space and each of the fuzzy objective functions defines the optimum solution by a fuzzy set of points. A method of solving a fuzzy multi-objective structural optimization problem using ordinary single-objective programming techniques is presented. The computational approach is illustrated with two numerical examples.

Notes: A computational methodology is presented for the solution of simultaneous linear equations that arise in the analysis of engineering systems involving fuzzy input parameters. In addition to a discussion on the existence of solution to the problem, the numerical solution to the fuzzy linear systems is defined and formalized. The framework of the proposed methodology consists of three major aspects involving (1) computerized selection of fuzziness, (2) implementation of fuzzy operations and (3) development and execution of a search-based algorithm. Two numerical examples are presented to illustrate the computational aspects of the proposed methodology. The present results are compared with those given by the combinatorial approach. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: The sensitivity of the closed-loop eigenvalues and eigenvectors of actively controlled flexible structures with distinct eigenvalues is considered. The sensitivity information is essential in the optimization of large space structures with stability/performance robustness, closed-loop eigenvalues or damping ratios treated as objective or constraint functions. The efficiency of the analytical expressions derived for the rates of change of the closed-loop eigenvalues with respect to structural design variables is demonstrated through two numerical examples. The utility of the sensitivity of the closed-loop eigenvalues and eigenvectors in evaluating the derivatives of the stability and performance robustness indices is also indicated and illustrated through numerical examples.
