Notes: The implementation of subcycling in an explicit finite element program executed on a concurrent computer with shared memory is described. The effects of vectorization and parallelization on the speed-up and efficiency achieved with subcycling is discussed. Numerical studies are presented to illustrate the effects of the number of processors, the size of element blocks and problem size. Finally, an efficient allocation algorithm which minimizes the effects of processor idleness is presented.

Notes: In this paper, the mixed boundary integral equation method is developed to study the elastic interactions of a fatigue crack and a micro-defect such as a void, a rigid inclusion or a transformation inclusion. The method of pseudo-tractions is employed to study the effect of a transformation inclusion. An enriched element which incorporates the mixed-mode stress intensity factors is applied to characterize the singularity at a moving crack tip. In order to evaluate the accuracy of the numerical procedure, the analysis of a crack emanating from a circular hole in a finite plate is performed and the results are compared with the available numerical solution. The effects of various micro-defects on the crack path and fatigue life are investigated. The results agree with the experimental observations.

Notes: Element consistency is generally checked using the patch test on an element patch of finite size. This condition may in certain cases be too restrictive, and disqualifies elements that appear to be convergent. A method termed ‘fractal patch test’ is presented, in which the patch size is maintained constant while the distorted mesh is refined. Examples are given for four-node quadrilateral elements used in plane stress and strain analysis, and for plate bending elements.

Notes: An assumed strain (strain interpolation) method is used to construct a stabilization matrix for the 9-node shell element. The stabilization procedure can be justified based on the Hellinger-Reissner variational method. It involves a projection vector which is orthogonal to both linear and quadratic fields in the local co-ordinate system of each quadrature point. All terms in the development involve 2 × 2 quadrature in the 9-node element. Example problems show good accuracy and an almost optimal rate of convergence.

Notes: Contact-impact algorithms, which are sometimes called slideline algorithms, are a computationally time-consuming part of many explicit simulations of non-linear problems because they involve many branches, so they are not amenable to vectorization, which is essential for speed on supercomputers. The pinball algorithm is a simplified slideline algorithm which is readily vectorized. Its major idea is to embed pinballs in surface elements and to enforce the impenetrability condition only to pinballs. It can be implemented in either a Lagrange multiplier or penalty method. It is shown that, in any Lagrange multiplier method, no iterations are needed to define the contact surface. Examples of solutions and running times are given.

Notes: A rank-sufficient flat triangular shell element with drilling degrees-of-freedom is described. A variational basis for this element has been provided by a three-field variational principle with relaxed interelement compatibility and traction continuity conditions. A generalized spurious mode control procedure has been developed in order to stabilize zero energy kinematical modes. Excellent performance has been found in an obstacle course and buckling problems.

Notes: The implementation of an explicit transient program for the three-dimensional non-linear finite element analysis of shells on a massively parallel SIMD computer, the CONNECTION Machine, is described. Particular emphasis is placed on interprocessor communication using router and NEWS schemes. A hybrid communication scheme, where NEWS is used within structured subdomains and the router is used to exchange nodal forces between subdomains, is examined. It is shown that the ‘mesh-structure index’ of most large meshes is sufficient to make hybrid schemes effective and this is verified by computer runs. Some benchmark non-linear calculations with 8K to 32K elements are also presented.

Notes: In this paper, a Mindlin plate element is formulated based on the Hellinger-Reissner principle and the γ-technique. The stiffness consists of a constant stress (one-point quadrature) matrix and a stabilization matrix. The stabilization matrix is compared with those previously proposed. In addition, the element uses a projection to modify the nodal displacements so that the patch test is satisfied. The projection matrix is based on a mode decomposition. Several numerical cases are presented, and it is shown that the mode decomposition projection is necessary both for satisfaction of the patch test and convergence.

Notes: The stability of time integration for a semidiscretization of structures and continua where the mesh is partitioned into subdomains integrated simultaneously by explicit and implicit methods is considered. Stability in energy is proven for linear systems subject to the Courant condition in the explicit subdomain for a central difference explicit and trapezoidal implicit integrator. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the procedure.
