    Notes: Dynamic response of strip footings resting on a soil medium, idealized as an elastic halfspace, is obtained using the finite element discretization technique with constant strain rectangular elements consisting of 4CST elements. Boundary stresses have been computed using a combination of Rayleigh wave absorbing boundaries (RAB) and standard vicous boundaries (SVB). The influences of contact pressure distributions at the footing - soil interface, mass and frequency ratios on the dynamic response of a strip footing are studied. Effects of embedment, static surcharge, nonhomogeneity and nonlinear constitutive relations are shown. Results are compared with the existing solution and are presented graphically.

    Notes: A method for the numerical solution of singular integro-differential equations is proposed. The approximate solution is sought in the form of the sum of a power series with unknown coefficients multiplied by a special term which controls the appropriate solution behaviour near and at the edges of the interval. The coefficients are to be determined from a system of linear algebraic equations. The method is applied to the solution of a contact problem of a disk inserted in an infinite elastic plane. Exact analytical solution is obtained for the particular case when the disk is of the same material as the plane. Comparison is made between the exact and the approximate solutions as well as with the solutions previously available in literature. The stability and the accuracy of the present method is investigated under variation of the parameters involved. The applicability of the method to the case when the boundary conditions for the unknown function are nonzero is discussed along with an illustrative example. A FORTRAN subroutine for the numerical solution of singular integro-differential equations is also provided.

    Notes: The two-dimensional Poisson equation is solved by the finite element method which uses rectangular elements and the bilinear shape function. Two kinds of weighting functions are employed, which correspond to the Galerkin method and the control-volume method. The results for three test problems, for which exact analytical solutions are available, show that the control-volume method leads to errors that are about one-half of the errors given by the Galerkin method. Incidentally, the five-point finite difference method is found to give errors which are nearly equal to those for the Galerkin method.

    Notes: The paper concerns analytical integration of polynomial functions over linear polyhedra in three-dimensional space. To the authors' knowledge this is a first presentation of the analytical integration of monomials over a tetrahedral solid in 3D space. A linear polyhedron can be obtained by decomposing it into a set of solid tetrahedrons, but the division of a linear polyhedral solid in 3D space into tetrahedra sometimes presents difficulties of visualization and could easily lead to errors in nodal numbering, etc We have taken this into account and also the linearity property of integration to derive a symbolic integration formula for linear hexahedra in 3D space. We have also used yet another fact that a hexahedron could be built up in two, and only two, distinct ways from five tetrahedral shaped elements These symbolic integration formulas are then followed by an illustrative numerical example for a rectangular prism element, which clearly verifies the formulas derived for the tetrahedron and hexahedron elements.

    Notes: The problem of providing settlement uniformity of a rigid foundation on a non-uniformly compressible base has been reduced to the contact problem from elasticity theory, with controlling parameters which allow one to select either co-ordinates of the point of application of the vertical load resultant or contours in plan at which the foundation slope will be equal to zero. The solution of the problem is illustrated by numerical examples.

    Notes: Predictor polynomials are often used in linear prediction methods mainly for extracting properties of physical systems which are described by time series. The aforementioned properties are associated with a few zeros of large polynomials and for this reason the zero locations of those polynomials must be analyzed. We present a linear algebra approach for determining the zero locations of predictor polynomials, which enables us to generalize some early results obtained by Kumaresan in the signal analysis field. We also present an analysis of zero locations for time series having multiple zeros. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: A classification method is presented to classify stress modes in assumed stress fields of hybrid finite element based on the eigenvalue examination and the concept of natural deformation modes. It is assumed that there only exist m (=n-r) natural deformation modes in a hybrid finite element which has n degrees of freedom and r rigid-body modes. For a hybrid element, stress modes in various assumed stress fields proposed by different researchers can be classified into m stress mode groups corresponding to m natural deformation modes and a zero-energy stress mode group corresponding to rigid-body modes by the m natural deformation modes. It is proved that if the flexibility matrix [H] is a diagonal matrix, the classification of stress modes is unique. Each stress mode group, except the zero-energy stress mode group, contains many stress modes that are interchangeable in an assumed stress field and do not cause any kinematic deformation modes in the element. A necessary and sufficient condition for avoiding kinematic deformation modes in a hybrid element is also presented. By means of the m classified stress mode groups and the necessary and sufficient condition, assumed stress fields with the minimum number of stress modes can be constructed and the resulting elements are free from kinematic deformation modes. Moreover, an assumed stress field can be constructed according to the problem to be solved. As examples, 2-D, 4-node plane element and 3-D, 8-node solid element are discussed. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: A three-dimensional multilayer composite finite element method has been developed based on a composite variational functional which takes three in-plane strains εx, εx, εxy and three transverse stresses σz, σyz, σxz as the basic variables. The continuity of the transverse stresses σz, σyz, σxz across the laminate thickness is assured a priori by introducing a partial stress field parameter α which is associated with the lower and upper surfaces of a lamina in a laminate. A method has been developed to form the partial stress field based on the assumed displacement field. With this method, a three dimensional (3-D) multilayer composite finite element is formulated for stress analysis of composite laminates. A numerical example is given, which shows some advantages of this composite element.
