Notes: In this paper, an efficient, exact zooming technique is developed which employs static condensation and exact structural reanalysis methods. For a multiple level of zooming such that the successive level of zooming is contained within the prior levels of zoom, repeated application of static condensation will reduce the system to one that is associated only with the degrees-of-freedom (dof) of the original model. Then, application of an exact static reanalysis technique permits the displacements at the dof of the original model that are contained in the final zoomed portion of the structure to be obtained first. Next, the response external to the zoom, as well as the response of additional dof within various levels of zooming, can be computed. With the triangular factor of the stiffness matrix of the original system available, this approach involves only the solution of a system of equations of small order. The proposed method is demonstrated by a numerical example.

Notes: A computational algorithm utilizing the free vibration modes of a structure is presented for calculating receptances. The usual eigensystem computed for large structural models is incomplete; hence the receptances are approximate. The formulae developed here increased receptance accuracy compared to classical spectral representations. Receptances are used extensively in eigensolution reanalysis, design and synthesis and also for forced harmonic response studies. In these areas receptance approaches offer a popular alternative to Rayleigh-Ritz subspace type methods. Structural models represented by nonsymmetric mass, damping and stiffness matrices, which occur frequently in rotating structures, may be treated using the receptance formulae presented. The receptance matrix derived is applicable to general, second-degree, square lambda matrices. This generalizes the receptance matrix commonly associated with matrix pencils.

Notes: Procedures are derived in this paper for defining fully stressed statically indeterminate trusses under a single loading condition for the particular case where redundant supporting members are added to a determinate truss. If the orientations of the redundant members are prescribed, their length can be computed easily from the fully stressed conditions. The cross-sectional areas of truss in fully stressed configuration (FSC) are not unique. The minimum weight FSC can be determined with use of linear programming. Several examples are included to illustrate the general formulation.
