Notes: The simulation of a large-scale gas transmission network involves the numerical solution of a large system of initial valued, stiff algebraic/differential equations. Rapid changes in the solution are present due to the disturbances generated by the varying consumer demand and the operation of network controlling devices such as compressors. This paper discusses the design of an efficient variable-step integrator for the solution of the problem. Two sets of strategies are presented for implementing the variable-step integrator; one for the implicit numerical method such as the diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta methods, and the other for the linearly implicit Rosenbrock-type method. The performance of the numerical methods implemented are compared with the British Gas simulation program PAN on a number of large, realistic transmission networks.

Notes: The paper considers the question of reduction of loads on a pipe network, which may be necessary as a result of failure in supply or interruption of a pipe. The non-linear relationship between pressure loss and flow along a pipe makes the problem of minimizing the reduction of loads also non-linear. An iterative linear approximation technique is therefore adopted. When the question is formulated as a problem in linear programming, the constraints include nodal pressures as well as loads. It is shown how the number of these constraints may be reduced.

Notes: A measure of the severity of a pipeline failure is the minimum reduction in load in the network necessary to ensure that no node falls below its minimum pressure. The expected loss of sales is calculated as the product of the minimum reduction in load and the expected duration of the period during which the pipeline will be in the inoperable state, and thus reflects both the severity and the frequency of the failure. Consequently, this index, whose evaluation involves network theory, optimization and probability theory, serves as a measure of the insecurity of the gas network. The security index can be evaluated for all points within a system, providing a basis of comparison between the relative vulnerability of different parts. The relative level of security of different design proposals can also be assessed using this index.

Notes: The structure and physical properties of optically active, metal-free 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octa (S-3,7-dimethyloctoxy)phthalocyanine ((S)-Pc(8,2)) are reported and compared with those of the phthalocyanine with (R,S) side chains (mixture of 43 stereoisomers). Unlike the latter compound, (S)-Pc(8,2) lacks a crystalline phase. A freshly prepared sample is in a distorted mesophase and reorganizes irreversibly to a more ordered phase above 65 °C. X-ray diffraction and circular dichroism studies indicate that the molecules are stacked in columns which have a hexagonal arrangement and a left-handed helical superstructure, that is, a novel chiral Dh* mesophase. Solid state NMR measurements reveal that the phthalocyanine units in the columns begin to vibrate laterally when the temperature is increased. At 111 °C (Dh* → Dr transition) they start to rotate around their columnar axes and at the same time the side chains become liquidlike. Energy migration is very efficient in the chiral Dh* phase and also in the frozen mesophase below 3 °C, as follows from luminescence spectroscopy. Intracolumnar charge transport, studied by the time-resolved microwave conductivity technique, turns out to be slower in the helically distorted columns than in linear columns. (S)-Pc(8,2) forms a very stable bilayer at the air-water interface, which can be transferred to give a high quality Langmuir-Blodgett film. The fact that this phthalocyanine is mesogenic at room temperature is thought to be responsible for this behavior.

Notes: -In this paper we present a synthesis of both α- and β-substituted aminoethane sulfonamide arginine mimics. The α-substituted sulfonamides were obtained starting from an alkene, whereas the β-substituted sulfonamides were derived from an amino acid derivative.

Notes: The treatment of ageing processes in polymers by the finite element (FE) method is described. The development of this analytical method is motivated by the need to assess the effects of ageing on the structural performance of polymers and polymeric composites, particularly when the structures are large and expensive to replace. Also, there is a need to assess the effectiveness of corrective action options when ageing problems do occur, which can be treated by this method. The method describes the treatment of multiple, reactive chemical species in multi-layered polymeric materials by the finite element method. Example problems featuring the simultaneous diffusion and chemical reaction are illustrated: a simple problem of binary diffusion and reaction with comparison of numerical to exact results, and the staged ageing/structural analysis of a solid rocket motor.
