Notes: The accuracy of certain thick plate elements when used in the context of thin plate problems can be improved by the use of reduced integration of the stiffness matrices. A series of numerical experiments on five different quadrilateral thick plate elements demonstrates the use of reduced integration and indicates the main reason for its success. This is the relaxation of a constraint on the shear strains. It is shown that the performance of a nine-noded Lagrangian element is near optimal.

Notes: Finite elements based on Mindlin-Reissner theory and three-dimensional theory are used to study the distribution of shear forces and twisting moments in plates with various simple support conditions. Differences between the results obtained using these two theories are highlighted. A crude adaptive mesh refinement procedure is applied to improve the accuracy of the finite-element analysis.

Notes: An adaptive refinement procedure using a new automatic quadrilateral element mesh generator is presented. The performance of the adaptive procedure in achieving a given accuracy with different mesh refinement strategies is compared. It is found that when using bilinear or biquadratic quadrilateral elements refinement strategies of both mesh enrichment and mesh regeneration can lead to a prescribed accuracy being achieved by the Zienkiewicz-Zhu adaptive procedure1 with the optimal rate of convergence. However, fewer mesh refinement steps are needed if the strategy of mesh regeneration is employed with the newly developed automatic quadrilateral element mesh generator2.

Notes: An adaptive finite-element (FE) method for the solution of two-dimensional transient dynamic problems is described. The computational domain is represented by an unstructured assembly of linear triangular elements, and the mesh adaption is achieved by regenerating the grid using an error indication procedure coupled with an automatic mesh generator. Problems involving shock and wave propagation are solved to illustrate the numerical performance of the method.

Notes: An adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) procedure is used in static thin shell analysis using triangular facet shell elements. The procedure described herein uses the h-version of adaptive refinement based on an error estimate determined by using the best guess values of bending moments and membrane forces obtained from a previous solution. It includes the use of a relaxation factor to achieve better convergence. Some examples are presented to illustrate this method. The results obtained are compared with those of uniform mesh refinement (UMR).

Notes: A methodology for the automatic mesh generation of quadrilateral elements is proposed. The methodology is based on the facts that (i) a region can always be subdivided entirely into quadrilaterals if the polygon which forms the boundary of the region has an even number of sides, (ii) a quadrilateral can be formed by two triangles which share a common side. By taking advantage of the techniques developed in an existing automatic triangular mesh generator, quadrilateral meshes can be generated according to the distribution of user specified element size over the domain of interest. In particular, an automatic quadrilateral mesh generator based on the advancing front technique for triangular mesh generation1 is described. Techniques to improve the quality of the generated quadrilateral meshes are introduced. The robustness and versatility of the mesh generator are demonstrated by a variety of examples.

Notes: This paper deals with the elastic free vibration analysis and structural shape optimization of prismatic folded plate and shell structures with circular curved planform. The structures are supported on diaphragms at two opposite edges. The basic formulation of a family of curved variable thickness C(0) Mindlin-Reissner finite strips is presented. The accuracy and performance of these newly developed strips are explored through a series of examples including annular plate sectors, a box girder bridge and a cylinder with an interior longitudinal plate. Numerical results obtained are compared with results from other sources. The whole shape optimization process is carried out by integrating finite strip analysis, cubic spline shape and thickness definition, sensitivity analysis and mathematical programming. The objective is either the maximization of the fundamental frequency or the minimization of volume by changing the shape or thickness variation of the cross-section of the structure with constraints on the volume or natural frequencies. Several examples are included to illustrate and highlight various features of the optimization, including annular sector plates, a curved box girder bridge and a cylinder shell segment with curved pianform.
