    Notes: We examine the use of natural boundary conditions and conditions of the Sommerfeld type for finite element simulations of convective transport in viscous incompressible flows. We show that natural boundary conditions are superior in the sense that they always provide a correct boundary condition, as opposed to the Sommerfeld-type conditions, which can lead to a singular formulation and a great loss of accuracy. For the Navier-Stokes equations, the natural boundary conditions must be combined with a simple method to eliminate perturbations on the pressure at the open boundary, which is the source of most errors.

    Notes: This paper presents a normalized smoothing function (NSF) algorithm that can improve the accuracy of smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) impact computations. It is presented specifically for axisymmetric geometry, but the principles also apply to plane strain and three-dimensional geometry. The approach consists of adjusting the standard smoothing functions for every node (and every cycle) such that the normal strain rates are computed exactly for conditions of constant strain rates (linear velocity distributions). This, in turn, generally improves accuracy for non-uniform strain rates. This can significantly improve the accuracy for free boundaries, for non-uniform arrangements of SPH nodes, and for small smoothing distances. A new smoothing function is also introduced. The NSF algorithm is shown to provide improved accuracy for a series of cylinder impact examples that includes two different smoothing functions and two different smoothing distances.

    Notes: A semi-analytical formulation is presented for transient metal-forming processes which, being axisymmetric in geometry, are subjected to non-axisymmetric loads and boundary conditions. The problems are described in terms of the flow formulation, and the pseudo-concentration method (two material based) is used to account for time integration and non-axisymmetric free surfaces. Proper Fourier series expansion of both the scalar fields defined to identify the free surfaces and of all the variables of the mechanical problem allows the performance of an advective transport-corresponding to time integration-for a non-axisymmetric velocity field. A block diagonal matrix is obtained for each harmonic component, as it has been achieved for the constant time solution. The new configuration found as a result of this analysis is taken to calculate the velocity field for the incremented time, which in turn is used to perform the following time step.

    Notes: Two drawbacks exist with the infinite elements used for simulating the unbounded domains of semi-infinite problems. The first is the lack of an adequate measure for calculating the decay parameter. The second is the frequency-dependent characteristic of the finite/infinite element mesh used for deriving the impedance matrices. Based on the properties of wave propagation, a scheme is proposed in this paper for evaluating the decay parameter. In addition, it is shown that by the method of dynamic condensation, the far-field impedance matrices for waves of lower frequencies can be obtained repetitively from the one for waves of the highest frequency, using exactly the same finite/infinite element mesh. Such an approach ensures that accuracy of the same degree can be maintained for waves of all frequencies within the range of consideration. Effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated in the numerical examples through comparison with previous results.

    Notes: Adaptive methods are applied to improve the finite element solutions for highly nonlinear elastohydrodynamic lubrication problem. A refinement scheme is developed which is based on the idea of equidistribution of local errors. Numerical experiments on the line contact problem show that the adaptive method is very effective in obtaining good approximations.
