Summary The aetiopathogenesis of auto-immune thyroid disease is still a matter for discussion. Morphologically, these illnesses are associated with a broad spectrum of overlapping changes. Thus, pathology cannot serve as the logical basis for a new classification. Therefore this overview makes use of the conventional nomenclature of clinically established entities and includes recently defined lesions. Besides histological characteristics, details of differential diagnostic value are presented in the context of clinical and laboratory data relevant for pathological classification.

Zusammenfassung Die Ätiopathogenese der Immunthyreopathien ist unverändert Gegenstand der Diskussion. Morphologisch zeigen diese Erkrankungen ein breites Spektrum einander überlappender Veränderungen, so daß auch die Pathologie nicht die Basis für eine neue Klassifikation darstellen kann. Die vorliegende Übersicht basiert daher auf der konventionellen Systematik klinisch etablierter Entitäten einschließlich erst in jüngerer Zeit definierter Erkrankungsformen. Dargestellt werden neben histologischen Charakteristika differentialdiagnostisch bedeutsame Details vor dem Hindergrund für die pathologische Diagnostik relevanter klinischer und laborchemischer Befunde.
