Notes: Abstract The acid dissociation constants of nine aliphatic carboxylic acids in several N,N-dimethylformamide-water mixtures were subjected to factor analysis (FA) and two solvent factors emerged. A further target factor analysis (TFA) indicated that the Kamlet and Taft general equation is reduced in these mixtures to two terms: the independent one and that related to the hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) basicity β solvatochromic parameter. Accordingly, an excellent correlation is found between the logarithmic values of the acidity constants of each acid in the binary mixtures and their corresponding β values.

Notes: Abstract A cross-sectional survey of a cohort study was carried out between June and December 1994 in Valencia, Spain (population in 1994: 764,293 inhabitants). Two hundred sixty public and private schools randomly selected from the total of schools in Valencia were invited to participate; 3948 children aged 6–7 years cooperated in our study after informed consent was obtained from parents and school director. The survey in Valencia is part of the International Study of Asthma and Allergy in Childhood (ISAAC). Prevalences for asthma, rhinitis and atopic dermatitis were determined and contrasted with socioeconomic status (SES) among children. No statistically significant associations were established between the prevalences of asthma, rhinitis and atopic dermatitis, and SES. However, atopic dermatitis was found to be common among upper class children (21.5 per 100 children). Likewise, significant associations were observed between the severity of atopy (2 or 3 atopic manifestations) and SES (p=0.000), being greater for lower strata (4.5 per 100 children); for the three SES level significant differences were established (p = 0.008) regarding passive exposure to tobacco smoke in the home.

Notes: Abstract A retrospective study of 143 patients histologically diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) was carried out in order to evaluate the influence of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on the appearance of more than one NMSC in the same person. Descriptive statistical and logistic regression analyses were carried out for each variable and its possible interaction, in order to determine the potential appearance of multiple NMSC. The results obtained were in agreement with those of earlier studies. A significant relationship was observed between occupational UV exposure and individuals with more than one NMSC. Those patients tended to be blue-eyed and were chronically exposed to UV radiation as a result of occupational activities (although not always in leisure activities); most did not take protective measures such as the use of hats or creams.

Notes: Abstract Between 1985–1989 were diagnosed 376 cases of TBC in “La Fe” hospital in Valencia. 36 of this cases also had AIDS. We have carried out a compared study among the 340 cases of TBC and the 36 cases of AIDS+TBC. In this way we have described the social and work conditions of both groups, the hospitalization, the associated patologies, the differents risk factors, the different characteristics of the disease in each group of TBC, the diagnoses methods and the treatment of each case.

Notes: Abstract A physical-chemical characterisation of the sedimentsof the Guadaira River in Southwest Spain has beencarried out, determining twenty-three parameters persample. Non-treated urban sewage and industrialwastewaters from olive oil and table olives affectthis river. The factor analysis of the data showshigh organic matter contents with metallicpollution. Consequently, points downstreamstand out because of very high organic and metallicpollution (Zn, Pb, Cr, Cu and Cd, in order ofabundance, showing concentrations in sediments rangingfrom 50–7500 times those of waters). Heavy metals partitioning studies can be a goodapproach to show the real activity of these metals in theaquatic environment. We applied Tessier's analytical sequential extraction scheme to sediments.Sediments would be in general mildly hazardous because wefound low levels of easily interchangeable metals in the first fraction. Nevertheless, that is not thecase in the river's last stretch, precisely wheresediments are most abundant, the heavy metal levelslargest and dredgings are made periodically. Here, their disposal is of concern; since the actual use ofthese sediments as organic amendment for agriculturalsoils is unacceptable.Interaction between waters and sediments in theriverbed by means of correlation, factor and clusteranalysis on waters and sediments data, wasinvestigated. With this approach we concluded that inthe final stretch there is a problem of contaminationof both, sediments and waters. However, in the middlecourse only sediments are actually polluted. Thiscorresponds to the previous research, when thesituation of waters in this zone was even worse.
