Notes: The magnetic phase diagram of the alloy series NdFe12−xMox (x=1.0∼2.5) is obtained. Below the Curie temperature, the ferromagnetic phase is divided into three regions: Uniaxial, canted 1, and canted 2. At a temperature of Tsr1 (below 200 K) a spin reorientation transition (SRT) was observed for all the samples, and at Tsr2 (above 200 K) another SRT was found for samples with Mo concentration 1.5〈x〈1.75. At room temperature the easy direction of magnetization (EDM) of NdFe12−xMox changes from the c axis to a canted structure with increasing Mo concentration, with a critical composition of x=1.56. At low temperatures (below 100 K) all NdFe12−xMox compounds exhibit a canted moment structure.

Notes: Changes in various superconducting properties as a function of silver substitution in the bulk granular high-Tc system Y-Ba-Cu-O have been investigated. In the low doping limit, Ag impurities behave as an excellent oxygen stabilizer and the critical current density is enhanced by an order of magnitude while the Tc remains practically unchanged. When the Ag content is increased to above 20%, the Tc starts to drop and the effects of Ag clusters as well as impurity phases become more important. However, the compound is still a superconductor with a Tc around 20 K by full substitution of Ag for Cu. The problems concerning the location of Ag atoms and formation of Ag clusters are examined with measurements of x-ray absorption fine structure using synchrotron radiation. Our results indicate that at least some Ag atoms occupy the Cu(1) and Cu(2) sites in the material. Magnetic field dependence shows that the critical current density of a bulk sintered high-Tc superconductor below a characteristic value H'c is mainly controlled by intergranular weak-link coupling. A shift of Hc with the addition of Ag helps explain the variation of critical current density in this compound system.

Notes: Transport properties of dilute silver-doped Y-Ba-Cu-O thin films prepared by a laser ablation technique have been investigated. The Hall coefficient and critical current density were measured as a function of temperature and in magnetic field up to 1.0 T. Silver doping is shown to result in significant changes in the temperature- and magnetic-field dependence of the transport properties of these films. The Hall coefficient in silver-doped films shows a clear decrease from that in silver-free films, consistent with an increase in the hole concentration caused by the silver impurities. This result lends a direct support to the observation that dilute silver dopants behave as acceptors but without appreciable influence on the transition temperature. The magnetic-field dependence of the normalized critical current density Jc(H)/Jc(0) is enhanced by silver doping, mainly due to a decrease in the effective weak-link area at the grain boundaries.

Notes: Ion-acoustic solitons in a two-component low-beta plasma are studied. It is found that under the quasineutrality condition only positive ion-acoustic solitons can exist in such a plasma. When the effect of charge separation is included, both positive and negative solitons can be found for Cs cos θ〈Vp〈Cs. Here θ is the angle between the wave vector and the magnetic field, Cs is the ion-acoustic velocity, and Vp is the phase speed. The amplitudes of the positive and negative solitons as a function of θ and Vp/Cs are also calculated.

Notes: Multilayers of YBaCuO superconductors and Ni-doped YBaCuO superconductors have been grown by the laser ablation technique to study the flux pinning properties of the nonmagnetic/magnetic superconducting heterostructures. Even though Ni doping depressed the superconducting properties of the single layer films, when sandwiched between high quality YBaCuO films, the composite showed high critical temperatures. Three-layer and five-layer structures of the YBaCuO/YBaCuNiO system become superconducting around 87 K when the doped layer thickness was below 100 A(ring). Three-layer structures grown on ZrO2(100) showed critical current densities of 3×106 A/cm2 at 77 K, which is about three times larger than the reported results in the literature. Epitaxial layer growth between the two superconductors was indicated by x-ray diffraction measurements, which showed complete c-axis orientation with full width at half maximum of 0.45° in a (006) line scan. Behavior of the critical current up to 0.85 T and temperatures down to 66 K has been studied. Critical current densities close to 4.5×106 A/cm2 in 0.85 T fields perpendicular to the films have been obtained at 67 K.

Notes: In situ laser deposition was used to fabricate YBa2Cu3O6.8 (YBCO) films on metallic substrates. With a buffer layer, YBCO films were strongly c-axis oriented. Tc = 83 K and Jc= 4000 A/cm2 at 77 K were obtained for a 0.5 μm YBCO film with a 0.15 μm yttrium-stabilized ZrO2 buffer layer. There was negligible interdiffusion occurring at the interfaces. The n value of YBCO films ranged from 1.4 to 1.5.

Notes: A transition buffer, consisting of subbuffers grown at different temperatures, was used to enhance the crystallinity and the transport properties of YBa2Cu3O6.8 (YBCO) films on metallic substrates. Films were fabricated using in situ laser deposition and were strongly c-axis oriented. Critical temperature of 87 K and critical current density of 3×104 A/cm2 at 77 K were obtained for a 0.5-μm-thick YBCO film with a 0.2 μm transition yttrium- stabilized ZrO2 buffer layer. Also, the magnetic field dependence of Jc could be enhanced by using Pt-coated metallic substrates.

Notes: By using a combination of deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) and electron paramagnetic resonance techniques applied to samples of varying compositions, we identify the bistable defect at Ec −0.17 eV in irradiated n-type silicon as a carbon interstitial-carbon substitutional pair. It arises upon annealing of interstitial carbon, which is also the precursor to a remarkable recently discovered four-level multistable defect which we now tentatively identify as a carbon-phosphorus pair. We demonstrate a new simple method for distinguishing the bistable carbon-carbon pair defect from the oxygen-vacancy pair under the same DLTS peak.
