    Notes: Summary The screening length of the deuterium ion by surrounding electrons in a palladium metal lattice, as estimated using two approaches—viz. the Thomas-Fermi screening theory and the Debye screening theory for plasmas in metal—is found to be less than the interatomic separation of ordinary hydrogen molecules. This has important implications for the possibility of cold nuclear fusion at room temperature, since slight fluctuations in equilibrium conditions may drive the deuterons to fuse together. The relative magnitudes of screening length for the cold nuclear fusion regime and classical hot nuclear regimes (inertial and magnetic confinement) reveal that in the former a comparatively smaller amount of energy is needed to overcome the repulsive Coulomb barrier between two deuterium ions.

    Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Si propone un nuovo metodo per la misura dell’energia di ancoraggio azimutale presso l’interfaccia fra un cristallo liquido nematico e un substrato isotropo. Per mezzo dell’algoritmo numerico di Berreman si dimostra che il contributo spurio dovuto alla presenza di uno strato distorto presso l’interfaccia è trascurabile se il campo magnetico applicato è sufficientemente piccolo (H〈10 kG). Si descrivono, infine, alcuni risultati preliminari concernenti l’energia di ancoraggio presso l’interfaccia fra il cristallo liquido 5CB e una superficie di vetro strusciata.
    Abstract: Резюме Предлагается новый рефлектометрический метод измерения азимутальной энергии зацепления на границе раздела между нематическим жидким кристаллом и изотопной фазой. Вычисляется фиктивный вклад в коэффициенты отражения, обусловленный, дисторсией поля директора вблизи границы раздела, используя численный алгоритм Бермана. Показывается, что этот вклад пренебрежимо мал для достаточно малых магнитных полей (H〈10 кГс). Приводятся результаты предварительных измерений азимутальной энергии зацепления на транице раздела между NLC 5CB и стеклянной пластинкой.
    Notes: Summary A new reflectometric method to measure the azimuthal anchoring energy at the interface between a nematic liquid crystal and an isotropic method is proposed. The spurious contribution to the reflectivity coefficients due to the presence of a director-field distortion near the interface is calculated by using the numerical Berreman algorithm and is shown to be negligible for magnetic fields small enough (H〈10 kG). Preliminary measurements of the azimuthal anchoring energy at the interface between the NLC 5CB and a rubbed glass plate are given.
