Notizen: Abstract We studied an imported host-parasitoid community in Hawaii, asking to what extent the species covaried in a systematic fashion even though all species were exotic to Hawaii, and occurred in an artificial agroecosystem (a commercial guava, Psidium guajava L., orchard). Using knock-down pyrethrin sprays we were able to accurately quantify numbers of the host, [oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel)] and its four major parasitoid species [Biosteres arisanus (Sonan), Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Ashmead), Psyttalia incisi (Silvestri), and Bi. vandenboschi (Fullaway)] at hourly intervals. We found that the parasitoids' activity and abundance was well correlated with the activity and abundance of their host, and that all four parasitoid species covaried in concert with one another. In fact, the magnitude of correlation between the different species in this system was greater than the correlation with temperature. This show clearly that an entirely exotic community, reassembled piecemeal as a result of biocontrol efforts, can end up with patterns of temporal covariation that are highly coincident. One other interesting result concerns the speed with which sprayed trees were recolonized by the fruit fly and its parasitoids. The time that it took each species to reach its mean density prior to removal by the first pyrethrin spray at 0600 hours varied. It took 2 h for female B. dorsalis to recolonize guava trees to pre-spray levels. It took 3 h for Bi. arisanus, 4 h for D. longicaudata, 7 h for Bi. vandenboschi and 14 h for P. incisi to reach pre-spray levels. The fact that Bi. arisanus recolonized vacant trees almost as rapidly as did the fruit fly pest suggest that there is little opportunity for the fruit fly to escape in space and time by “staying one step ahead of its enemies”.

Notizen: Abstract From January 1983 through August 1988, 318 consecutive patients with refractory germ cell neoplasms were treated with ifosfamide-containing combination chemotherapy. The patients received ifosfamide at 1.2 gm/m2 day with cis-platin 20 mg/m2 day for 5 days and etoposide 75 mg/m2 day for 5 days or vinblastine 0.11 mg/kg on days 1 and 2 for each cycle. Of 277 evaluable patients, NAC was used as an uroprotector in the initial 86 patients while the latter 191 consecutive patients received mesna to reduce urothelial toxicity. Dosages of NAC was 2.0 gm po q 6 hr and for mesna 120 mg/m2 IV push prior to ifosfamide and then 1200 mg/m2/day as continuous infusion of 5 consecutive days. All patients received 3.0 liters of normal saline per day. The number of courses of chemotherapy given in the two groups were similar. Twenty-four of the 86 patients (27.9%) receiving NAC developed hematuria (13 patients — grade 1, 4 patients — grade 2, and 7 patients — grade 3 toxicity). While 8 out of 191 (4.2%) mesna patients developed hematuria (6 — grade 1 and 2 — grade 3) (p〈0.0001). The incidence of severity of renal toxicity was similar in the two groups. Ifosfamide dosage was reduced solely for urothelial toxicity in 11 patients receiving NAC compared with none of the patients receiving mesna (p〈0.0001). Chemotherapy response was similar in the two groups. In conclusion, mesna provides better urothelial protection from ifosfamide-induced toxicity than NAC and allows better maintenance of the drug dosage.

Notizen: Abstract The mechanical properties of composites are influenced, in part, by the volume fraction, orientation, constituent mechanical properties, and interfacial bonding. Cortical bone tissue represents a short-fibered biological composite where the hydroxyapatite phase is embedded in an organic matrix composed of type I collagen and other noncollagenous proteins. Destructive mechanical testing has revealed that fluoride ion treatment significantly lowers theZ-axis tensile and compressive properties of cortical bone through a constituent interfacial debonding mechanism. The present ultrasonic data indicates that fluoride ion treatment significantly alters the longitudinal velocity in theZ-axis as well as the circumferential and radial axes of cortical bone. This suggests that the distribution of constituents and interfacial bonding amongst them may contribute to the anisotropic nature of bone tissue.
