Abstract The escape probability for a vortex from a realistic twin boundary pinning potential is calculated and compared to the corresponding Kim-Anderson expression. The comparison indicates that for HTS parameters, the escape probability depends on the pinning-potential shape, and substantially deviates from the Kim-Anderson expression due to the neglect of diffusive motion in and in between the pinning potential wells.
