Notes: Summary 1. In female rats the fast m. plantaris was overexerted by denervating the m. gastrocnemius and m. soleus. Half of these rats were trained. 2. Essentially the findings on the isometric contraction characteristics are in agreement with previous results: a) training had no additional results: b) muscle weight and tetanic force increased to about 145% of that of the cotrol muscles (=100%), tetanic force per unit weight and per unit cross sectional area did not change, twitch contraction time did not change c) the fast m. plantaris remained fast. 3. Force-velocity diagrams of the hypertrophied and control muscles have the same curve parameter (a/Po). 4. Maximal speed of contraction per unit muscle length in hypertrophied muscles is lower than in control muscles. It could be shown that this is at least partly due to an increase in muscle fibre angle of the pennate m. plantaris. 5. There is no inverse relation between twitch contraction time and maximal speed of contraction per unit muscle length if the fibre angle changes due to hypertrophy.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The b-wave in the ERG of guinea pigs born and reared in darkness for three months is considerably smaller than that in animals of the same age reared under normal circumstances. Exposure to room illumination for ten days greatly restores the ERG. The ERG in four days old light deprived animals is normally developed. A three months light deprivation period causes a relatively small effect in normally raised adult animals. From these experiments it is concluded that the initial ERG development in the guinea pig is not affected by light deprivation. However, once developed the ERG in new born animals is more vulnerable to prolonged light deprivation than that in adult ones.
