Description / Table of Contents:
Photo-Diels-Alder Reactions with AnthraceneElectron-deficient alkenes, styrenes, and 1,3-dienes quench the fluorescence of electronically excited anthracene and react non-stereospecifically to yield [4 + 2]-adducts. Yields and quantum yields are preparatively useful. In all cases the dimerization of anthracene competes with [4 + 2]-cycloaddition and sensitized isomerizations of olefins are observed. Frequently there is competition from further reactions including polymerization and with 1,3-dienes [4 + 4]-additions occur competitively. Polar and steric influences on the experimental result are studied and discussed in terms of the experimentally detected two-step mechanism via intermediates. It is shown, that photochemistry extends the scope of Diels-Alder reactions. In one case (with dimethyl muconate) exciplex formation could be detected, which does not facilitate but on the contrary hinders photoaddition. The structures of all new adducts follow from spectroscopic data, independent syntheses, or comparison with new reference compounds. Some chemical transformations are studied in order to clarify some discrepancies with literature reports.
Notes:
