The Characteristics and the Importance of Free RadicalsA review of the discovery of the first free radicals is followed by a consideration of the characteristics of these substances in the light of the more recent views held on the theory of electrons, and the problems concerned with the interpretation of the existence of free radicals are shown. Questions dealing with the state of linkage and the reactivity as well as the arrangement in space of the substituents of a double bond form the contents of more recent results of research in biradicals. The confirmed existence of unstable free radicals with a short period of life, bearers of a high degree of energy and, as a result thereof, of a pronounced reactivity, leads us into a „new organic chemistry“ with an as yet unsurveyable abundance of synthetic preparative and technical possibilities, among which the chain reactions with saturated and unsaturated compounds, in particular the telomerisation, stand out prominently.
Notes:
