Notes: Abstract Extracts of marine algae have been tested to determine their ability to cleave DNA. The species producing positive results wereAscophyllum nodosum, Fucus serratus, F. spiralis, F. vesiculosus, Halidrys siliquosa andHimanthalia elongata. Partial purification of each extract by dialysis against water revealed that the active compounds in each species were high molecular weight polyphenols.
