    Notizen: Abstract Reproductive tissues were collected monthly from male Antechinus stuartii during the first 5 months of post-partum development, a period corresponding to the time between birth and the initial increase in plasma androgen above non-detectable levels. The gonad appeared undifferentiated at day 3 after birth, but the basic structure of the testis (tunica albuginea, sex cords, stroma) was well established at 1 month of age. At this stage the developing sex cords contained a single layer of pre-Sertoli cells which surrounded a central core of gonocytes. Mitotic division of cells within the cords was common. Intertubular fetal Leydig cells, often observed in clumps, and perivascular and peritubular fetal Leydig cells were common and readily identified. By 2 months of age there was an obvious increase in cord diameter and the abundance of pre-Sertoli cells, while a marked reduction in the density of connective tissue cells and fetal Leydig cells was observed in the interstitium. Fetal Leydig cells appeared to persist only in close association with the developing seminiferous cords. Testicular size and the diameter and convolutions of the seminiferous cords increased substantially (two fold increase in cord diameter) by 3 months of age. Gonocytes had begun to migrate toward the basal lamina of the cords, and connective tissue cells and Leydig cells appeared in large numbers throughout the interstitium. By 4 and 5 months of age, gonocytes were commonly seen in contact with the basement membrane, and the cords remained non-patent. Leydig cell number and density increased greatly during these months. The epididymal epthelium remained undifferentiated throughout the first 5 months of development. Epithelial cells characteristically contained a large nucleus which occupied most of the cell, very little cytoplasm and few organelles. The diameter of the epididymal duct was similar throughout for the first 3 months of the study. In months 4 and 5 the diameter of the duct in caput and corpus regions increased, ahead of that of the cauda, possibly in relation to variations in androgen exposure at different regions along the developing duct. Further histological and quantitative studies on the growth and development of Leydig cells within the Dasyuridae are needed for comparision with eutherian mammals, which together with knowledge of the changing levels of fetal androgens may provide a greater understanding of the role of the different populations of Leydig cells in the differentiation of the testis and male reproductive tract. Marsupials from excellent animal models for such studies, since much of the early differentiation of the gonads and reproductive tract occurs in the pouch, rather than in utero, allowing easy access to young at this time.

    Notizen: Abstract A study was conducted with seven-month-old plantlets, of the clone 2814 of Eucalyptus grandis × E. camaldulensis Dehnh. hybrid and of the clone 2798 of E. grandis × E. robusta Sm., subjected to sublethal water stress. During the imposed drought, leaf water potentials and transpiration rates decreased, while ethylene production and leaf chlorophyll concentration increased to a maximum during the onset of water stress, and then declined. Stomatal closure coincided with or preceded maximum ethylene production. A saturation type relationship between ethylene production and chlorophyll concentration was observed. Genotypic differences in the response to water stress occurred between clones with clone 2814 appearing to be a drought avoider and clone 2798 a drought tolerator.

    Notizen: Abstract This investigation was performed to study the effect on plant water relations and growth when some of roots grow into dry soil. Common spring water (Triticum aestivum) plants were grown from seed in soil in 1.2 m long PVC (polyvinyl chloride) tubes. Some of the tubes had a PVC partition along their center so that plants developed a split root system (SPR). Part of the roots grew in fully irrigated soil on one side of the partition while the rest of the roots grew into a very dry (-4.1 MPa) soil on the other side of the partition. Split root plants were compared with plants grown from emergence on stored soil moisture (STOR) and with plants that were fully irrigated as needed (IRR). The experiment was duplicated over two temperature regimes (10°/20°C and 15°/25°C, night/day temperatures) in growth chambers. Data were collected on root dry matter distribution, soil moisture status, midday leaf water potential (LWP), leaf relative water content (RWC) and parameters of plant growth and yield. Some roots were found in the dry side of SPR already at 21 DAE (days after emergence) at a soil depth of 15 to 25 cm. Soil water potential around these roots was -0.7 to -1.0 MPa at midday, as compared with the initial value of -4.1 MPa. Therefore, water apparently flowed from the plant into the dry soil, probably during the night. Despite having most of their roots (around 2/3 of the total) in wet soil, SPR plants developed severe plant water stress, even in comparison with STOR plants. Already at 21 DAE, SPR plants had a LWP of -1.5 to -2.0 MPa, while IRR and STOR had a LWP of -0.5 MPa or higher. As a consequence of their greater plant water stress, SPR as compared with IRR plants were lower in tiller number, ear number, shoot dry matter, root dry matter, total biomass, plant height and grain yield and had more epicuticular wax on their leaves. It was concluded that the exposure of a relatively small part of a plant root system to a dry soil may result in a plant-to-soil water potential gradient which may cause severe plant water stress, leading to reduced plant growth and yield.

    Notizen: Use of porous glass with a broad pore-size distribution as a column packing for gel permeation chromatography has been investigated. The porous glass is readily available, and columns are packed easily and have excellent mechanical stability. Separations of polystyrene over molecular weight ranges of 500-2,000,000 have been obtained. Porous glass thus appears to be a useful packing material for gel permeation chromatography.

    Notizen: Sensitive refractive index measurements on solutions have indicated that the narrow molecular weight polystyrene samples prepared by the Mellon Institute method exhibit a small systematic molecular weight-refractive index dependence up to 300,000 and higher. This upper limit is higher than had previously been suggested. Sensible consistency is generally assumed above a few thousand molecular weight. The effect on this molecular weight-refractive index dependence on gel permeation chromatography and light-scattering molecular weight measurements on polystyrene standards is illustrated.

    Notizen: In order to understand the evolutionary significance of sperm-pairing in American marsupials, an ultrastructural investigation was made of this process in the South American grey short-tailed opossum, Monodelphis domestica. One epididymis from each animal (5) was fixed for light and electron microscopy and divided into 18 segments. The contralateral tract was divided into similar segments and assessments made of the total number of spermatozoa and the proportion of sperm-pairs. The mean total sperm number was 4.20 ± 0.62 × 106/epididymis. Sperm-pairing commenced around segment 9 in the proximal corpus epididymidis and reached a maximum of 80% in the caudal sperm storage region of the duct. The sperm-pairing process was characterised by four stages. Spermatozoa exhibited parallel alignment as indicated by the positioning of identical cross-sections of sperm heads. This was followed by close apposition with acrosomal faces parallel rather than opposite. Rotation of the sperm heads around each other then apparently occurred as indicated by the morphological alignment of sections of paired sperm heads. Sperm-pairing was complete when the acrosomal faces were precisely aligned and joined. Misalignment and failure to pair was observed in about 20% of spermatozoa in the cauda epididymis. Such a complex sperm-pairing process may ensure that conjugated spermatozoa are precisely aligned so that flagella movement can be accurately coordinated for maximal progressive motility. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notizen: This study was conducted to investigate some fundamental fatigue testing variables as they apply to the response characteristics of acrylic bone cement. Cyclic loading under load control was conducted at frequencies of 1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 Hz in air at room temperature. At a tensile stress range of 0.3-20.0 MPa the fatigue life increased linearly with logarithmic frequency. The effect of conditioning and testing in saline at both room temperature and 37°C at similar stress levels and a frequency of 10 Hz were also examined. When compared to dry testing at room temperature, testing in saline at 37°C resulted in a reduction in fatigue life while testing in saline at room temperature produced an increase in fatigue life. Of a number of statistical distributions considered, the Weibull was found to be the most appropriate in documenting the findings of this investigation. A companion fractographic investigation of the failure surfaces demonstrated distinct regions of crack growth and fast fracture.

Using charging ratios of 90 parts of butadiene and 10 parts of chloroanthracene in the absence of benzene, the incorporation of the 1 isomer at 62% conversion is 16.9% and the incorporation of the 2 isomer at 80% conversion is 7.3%. In the presence of added benzene (5 ml. to 84 g. charge) the incorporation of the 1 isomer is 21.2% at 39% conversion and the incorporation of the 2 isomer is 9.4% at 53% conversion. The anthracene derivative is incorporated in the polymer chain through the meso positions.
