Notizen: Many experimental studies on the bubble column have been reported by Japanese researchers since around 1960. They include studies of bubble behaviour, bubble size distribution, transition from the homogeneous bubbly flow regime to the heterogeneous liquid circulation regime, liquid velocity distribution, longitudinal liquid mixing, hydrodynamic modelling, the gas holdup, and the volumetric coefficient of gas-liquid mass tranfer kLa. Studies covered various modified bubble columns, such as the airlift reactor with an external or internal loop, the packed bubble column, and others. Performance of three-phase bubble columns, which deal with suspensions or emulsions, and their use as bioreactors or chemical reactors were also studied.

Notizen: From the experimental data on the rates of urea transfer from blood to dialysate in a test hemodialyzer, a practical equation for the effect of the hematocrit on the blood-phase urea transfer coefficient is proposed. With this equation, the overall mass transfer coefficient that takes into account the properties of the blood can be estimated for the commercially available disposable flat membrane-type and hollow fiber-type hemodialyzers from the data for a relatively simple dialysate-dialysate system.

Notizen: Empirical studies were conducted on how rates of hemolysis were influenced by mechanical factors, such as shear, turbulence, agitation, pressure fluctuation, and bubbling, in five types of experimental apparatus: rotating cylinder, rotating disks, agitated vessel, pressure pulsator, and bubble columns. Our data indicate, at least qualitatively, that an important mechanical factor controlling rates of hemolysis in practical devices, in which blood does not flow in thin channels or capillaries, is the turbulent stress in the bulk blood, rather than the shear at the blood-solid interface.
