Abstract An n-compartment mathematical model describing the uptake and the absorption kinetics of an inhaled inert gas in the human body has been proposed. An approximated analytical solution of the model has been proposed and compared with the exact numerical solution. The physical meaning and the reliability of the approximations introduced have been discussed and checked, comparing our results with those obtained with the well known and experimentally proved Mapleson's analogue model.
