Description / Table of Contents:
Graphite oxide is not formed from graphite and agents which easily transfer oxygen unless the graphite is first oxidized to the graphite salt Cn+A- · 2 HA. The more water there is in the oxidation mixture, the faster and the more completely graphite oxide is formed upon further oxidation. The water content must not, however, exceed a critical concentration, above which the graphite salts are decomposed. Electrochemical formation of graphite oxide is possible in conc. HClO4. Practically no carbon is lost in the preparation of graphite oxide. Therefore, there are no holes within the network of carbon atoms in the graphite oxide layers.
Notes:
In konz.
