Notes: Abstract Analytical pigment investigation can reveal important information for art-historians. The use of two micro-analytical techniques, micro Raman-spectroscopy and total reflection X-ray fluorescence, is shown to be very successful. These techniques give complementary information: Raman spectroscopy allows the identification of the different materials the pigment grains consist of, and total reflection X-ray fluorescence gives the average elemental composition of the sample. The latter is helpful to distinguish between the different palettes used by different artists or workshops. Samples can be taken with cotton wool swabs (Q-tips), which cause no visible alteration to the artefact. Such a sample allows both Raman-spectroscopy and total reflection X-ray fluorescence to be applied using less than 1 μg of material. This approach is illustrated with the pigment investigation of seven late-medieval Mercatellis manuscripts, kept in the Ghent University Library.

Notes: Abstract An electron microprobe was used to determine the sulfur distribution in stone materials, especially sedimentary rocks. The investigations were performed to elucidate damage mechanisms in natural stones built in historical monuments. Quantitative results could be attained using one single calibration curve determined by synthetic standard samples. The applicability of the technique was proved by samples subjected to different exposure simulation experiments.

Notes: Abstract.  Particulate matter of Diesel emissions collected from diluted exhaust during standard test runs with two Diesel fuels of different sulfur content was analysed by total-reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF). The trace elements determined were S, Ca, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb. Additionally, some filter materials were tested with respect to their applicability for sample collection. Quartz fibre filters were found to be most suitable, both from a technical and a chemical point of view. A clear reduction of total particulate emissions during the whole test was observed when the fuel with very low sulfur content was used. In addition, it was found that the wear metal content of particulate matter emitted by a cold engine was higher than that observed during normal engine working temperature.
