Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Summary The various pharmacological effects (e.g. respiratory and circulatory depression, psychosomatic effects, sedation, ability to produce pupillary constriction) of nalorphine and levallorphan are similar to those of the narcotic analgesics. In contrast to this, the pharmacological effects of the recently developed narcotic antagonist, naloxone (N-allylnoroxymorphone) does not resemble those of the narcotics. As a narcotic antagonist, however, mg for mg naloxone is about 30 times as potent as nalorphine and 6 times as potent as levallorphan. Since naloxone, in the absence of narcotics, does not produce respiratory depression, it is the antagonist of choice in the treatment of those cases (e.g. respiratory depression of the newborn, or respiratory depression caused by unknown drugs) when it is not definitely known whether or not the respiratory depression was caused by a narcotic.
