    Notes: Fresh frozen specimens of growth cartilage have been drysectioned and examined in the electron microscope without any staining. Dense granules in the mitochondria of chondrocytes were observed near calcifying areas. This confirms the presence of these mineral granules in the original tissue because this technique avoids the preparative artefacts of conventional electron microscopy.

    Notes: Dioxotetracyanomolybdate(IV) has been found to form a 1 : 2 complex with 2,2′-bipyridyl. The kinetics of the reaction has been studied over the pH range 5.3-8.7 by visible spectrophotometry under pseudo conditions. The effect of the 2,2′-bipyridyl and dioxotetracyanomolybdate(IV), temperature, ionic strength, and pH on the reaction rate was determined. The reaction follows first-order kinetics with respect to dioxotetracyanomolybdate(IV) ion and fractional-order kinetics with respect to 2,2′-bipyridyl. Values for the outer-sphere complex formation constant (Kos2) and rate constants (k2) were also calculated from the kinetic data. It was found that rate of the reaction increases with the decreasing pH. The rate constant and quantum yield values are dependent on both the concentration of the metal cyanide and the ligand predicting the mechanism to be an associative one.     Notes: β-Lactoglobulin (BLG) is the most abundant whey protein in sheep milk but it is not present in mouse milk. We have previously shown that transgenic mice carrying the BLG gene express it specifically in the mammary gland and secrete BLG into milk at high concentrations. Here we demonstrate that BLG transcription is correctly initiated in mice and that BLG synthesis is restricted to the secretory epithelial cells of the mammary gland. We have also determined the temporal pattern of milk protein gene expression and find that the BLG transgene is regulated coordinately with mouse β-casein and that the patterns of regulation of BLG in mouse and sheep share some similarities.
