    Notes: Abstract The cell-mediated immunity (CMI) of 47 critically ill surgical patients admitted to an Intensive Therapy Unit was assessed by their response to recall skin antigens and found to be markedly reduced. Thirty-seven patients showed no reaction to initial skin testing (NR), and there were 21 deaths in this group. Ten patients reacted (R) to initial skin testing and only one of these patients died (p〈0.025). Repeat skin testing was performed on 22 NR patients. Eight became R on repeat testing and there was one death in this group, whilst 14 remained NR and there were 11 deaths in this group (p〈0.025). The major clinical difference between R and NR patients was a greater incidence of severe sepsis in the NR patients. These findings suggest that the use of recall skin antigens to assess CMI may be a valuable investigation in critically ill surgical patients and that initial and persisting failure to react to skin tests is associated with a poor outcome.

    Notes: Abstract Serum protein levels were found to be markedly reduced in 44 critically ill surgical patients after they had been resuscitated in an intensive therapy unit (ITU). There was no difference in initial protein levels between those patients who survived and those who died, or between those patients who reacted to skin testing with recall antigens and those who showed no reaction. However, albumin and transferrin levels were lower in those patients who had major sepsis (p〈0.02). Twenty-six of the patients remained in the ITU for more than five days. Repeat measurements made in these patients shortly before death or discharge from the ITU showed that prealbumin and transferrin levels were still not different in 17 survivors and 9 non-survivors. However, the mean albumin level was lower in the non-survivors (p〈0.02), although nearly all of the survivors also continued to have low levels of albumin. There was no improvement in serum protein levels in 10 patients who, on skin testing, converted from being non-reactors to reactors. Although reduced serum protein levels were a common finding in critically ill patient, they were not clearly related to outcome or the response to recall skin antigens and this suggests that these tests may be altered by different mechanisms.

    Notes: Equine endometrial cups are localized endometrial outgrowths which develop in mares during early pregnancy and secrete pregnant mares serum gonadotrophin (PMSG).The principal cell-type found in endometrial cups is large, regular and epithelioid in appearance. These cup cells have one or two large euchromatic nuclei with dense, characteristic nucleoli. Their cytoplasm is filled with irregular profiles of endoplasmic reticulum containing pale flocculent material. Lipid droplets and a few mitochondria are also present. Golgi material is not prominent and the absence of membrane-bound secretory granules suggest that the Golgi apparatus does not package a secretory product. The plasmalemma is mostly smooth in outline but is modified in some places to form short microvilli or complex intercrescent folds.

    Notes: Light and electron microscopic examination of tissues fixed in situ by perfusion of the gravid horn of the uteri of mares between 36 and 38 days of gestation revealed that the equine endometrial cups are composed of trophoblast cells which originate from the discrete annulate portion of the foetal membranes known as the chorionic girdle. This structure consists of closely opposed villous projections of elongated trophoblast cells and it becomes firmly attached to the endometrium around the thirty-sixth day of pregnancy. The specialized girdle cells invade and phagocytose the endometrial epithelium and then migrate through the basal lamina into the endometrial stroma where they develop into endometrial cup cells.

It is shown that the organ can be divided into proximal, distal and terminal portions. Each portion is histologically unique and is situated in a different part of the body.     Notes: ZnS has been grown on GaAs(100) substrates by atmospheric pressure metal-organic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) using dimethylzinc (DMZn) and t-butyl mercaptan (t-BuSH). The effects of the reactant gas phase molar ratio and the growth temperature on the characteristics of the material grown have been investigated. The structural quality of the layer is demonstrated by X-ray rocking curve half-widths of less than 300 arcsec for the epilayers. There is little significant pre-reaction and the layers are of excellent surface morphology and layer uniformity.

    Notes: The electron microscope has been used to examine luminal spermatozoa from the cauda epididymidis and proximal vas deferens of rats, mice, hamsters and guinea pigs. Free in the lumen of all species are accumulations of a dense material within which are vesicles, granules and dense bodies, as well as spermatozoa. The spermatozoa are undergoing a process of degeneration as judged by a loss of plasma membrane from both heads and tails and further disruption of acrosomal membranes, mitochondrial sheaths and outer dense fibers. Disruption of spermatozoa also occurs outside these obvious dense masses when the luminal protein precipitated by the fixation procedure has contact with the spermatozoon. Intact spermatozoa are separated from luminal material by a clear “halo”.

    Notes: The existence of a discrete group of cells that are able to phagocytose spermatozoa is reported in the terminal vas deferens of the rat. In addition it is shown that phagocytosis of spermatozoa occurs in the gland of the vas deferens. The cytological mechanisms involved in the phagocytotic process are discussed, and the role that this activity may have on the removal of surplus spermatozoa is discussed.

    Notes: The fine structure of the epithelium lining the extratesticular rete testis, ductuli efferentes and ductus epididymidis of the rabbit has been investigated. In the ductuli efferentes the epithelium is composed of two cell types, principal cells and ciliated cells. The latter cell type is distinguished from principal cells by the presence of cilia projecting into the lumen and the position of the nucleus in the apical half of the cell. Principal cells in this segment are characterized by micropinocytotic vesicles on the surface plasma membrane and a variety of small dense bodies scattered throughout the cytoplasm. In the ductus epididymidis basal cells replace ciliated cells as the second cell type, but differences between various segments of the epididymis are related to the fine structure of the principal cells. In the proximal caput epididymidis (Nicander's region 1) the principal cells are tall with long microvilli. They typically contain a small Golgi apparatus and a cluster of dense bodies adjacent to the nucleus. In the distal caput epididymidis (Nicander's regions 2-5) the apical cytoplasm of principal cells is filled with numerous micropinocytotic vesicles and large multivesicular bodies; these features are interpreted as signs of absorptive activity. The multivesicular bodies are absent from the cytoplasm of principal cells in the corpus epididymidis (Nicander's region 6) and, instead, numerous elements of smooth endoplasmic reticulum, a large Golgi apparatus, lipid droplets and dense bodies characterize principal cells in this segment. Towards the proximal cauda epididymidis (Nicander's region 7), the number of dense bodies (lysosomes) in the cytoplasm increases considerably. In the globose cauda (Nicander's region 8), the principal cells are reduced in height, and in addition to the features described in region 7, are characterized by a concentric array of rough endoplasmic reticulum in the basal cytoplasm. These observations are discussed in relation to the role of the epididymis in promoting the maturation and survival of spermatozoa.
