    Notes: Abstract A BGK-type Boltzmann equation for a neutral gas is considered as a model for electron swarms, because the gas and the electron Boltzmann equation have a common diffusion approximation. Both full- and half-range theory are developed using orthogonality methods of solution. Preliminary comparisons with diffusion theory are presented.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper we give the explicit form of the solutions of the singular integral equations associated with some models of gas dynamics and plasma physics which are extensively investigated in the existing literature. In particular, we deal with equations on infinite and semi-infinite contours, where the data are assumed to be meromorphic functions. In this context we rederive some published results and present some new results which show how our method can be successfully used to obtain the explicit form of the solutions in much more general cases than those found in the literature.

    Notes: The compensatory growth of the kidney which is induced by unilateral ne-phrectomy is a highly regulated process resulting principally in hypertrophy of the remaining kidney. The events which regulate this process are unknown. We have examined the levels of transcripts for the proto-oncogenes, myc, H-ras, K-ras, and fos, and the cellular genes, H4 histone, ornithine aminotrans-ferase, and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, following unilateral nephrec-tomy in the rat. The pattern of expression of c-myc, c-H-ras, and c-K-ras during compensatory growth of the kidney differs from the pattern of expression of these proto-oncogenes during liver regeneration, in which, unlike the kidney, hyperplasia rather than hypertrophy predominates. The lack of change in the abundance of these proto-oncogene transcripts following unilateral nephrec-tomy suggests a primary relationship between the expression of these proto-oncogenes and DNA synthesis and indicates there may be separate signals for cell growth, one to double cell size and one to replicate DNA. Increased mRNA transcripts for the enzymes ornithine aminotransferase and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase were induced in the contralateral kidney after ne-phrectomy. The time course of expression for these two enzymes differs. The early expression of the gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase gene may indicate an involvement of this glutathione-metabolizing enzyme during renal compensatory growth, while the function of the delayed increase in ornithine amino-transferase transcripts in the remaining kidney is not apparent.

    Notes: Replication origins in Saccharomyces cerevisiae have been identified through the clonning of autonomous replication sequence (ARS) elements that allow the extrachromosonal maintenance of plasmid molecules. ARS activity requires a close matcht to an 11 bp consensus sequence and A+T-rich flanking DNA. ARS elements with a wide range of capacities for promoting plasmid maintenance have been described. We determined the ARS activity of plasmid with inserts consisting of repetitions of a 64 bp 100% A+T sequence that has sequence similarities to known ARS elements. An insert with approximately four repeats did not yield transformants, but inserts with either eight or eleven repeats did. The cooperative of ARS activity did not require a contiguous arrangement since a plasmid containing two inserts of four repeats each, separated by about 1 kb, was functional. Our results show that a charge from non-function to function can be accomplished by the cumulative action of individually inactive sequences. We conclude that the probability of replication initiation is too low with only four repeats to allow plasmid maintenance, but the overall probability is increased by further sequence iteration to provide origin activity. We suggest that chromosomes may contain streches with dispersed, weak origin elements, each undetected by the conventional ARS assay, that in sum provide origin function.
