    Notes: In a comparative study of the branchial epithelium of fishes we find the occurrence of three distinct types and seven subtypes of intra-epithelial glands which are in intimate association with the branchial epithelium of fishes.These glands have been classified according to their morphological patterns, cytoplasmic content and other features dealing with structural complexity.Although these structures arrange themselves in a graded series which become increasingly more and more complex, there does not appear to be any definite correlation between the structural complexity of the glands, and the apparent evolutionary history of the fishes.We conclude from the characteristic arrangement, relationships, and specific staining reactions that these structures are intra-epithelial mucous glands.

    Notes: Observations were conducted at the light and electron microscope level of the formation and mineralization of dentin. At the light level it was shown that predentin is made up of the odontoblast process, collagen fibers and a ground substance. As mineralization occurs, the fibers tend to condense and thicken in areas adjacent to the odontoblast process. Fibers continue to invade the developing matrix and, as in early dentinogenesis, they appear at all times to be derived from the pulp.At the E.M. level the significant observations made in reference to dentin formation consist of the identification of granular masses appearing in the interfibrillar spaces initially in the region of the dentino enamel junction. Histochemical tests at the E.M. level demonstrated that the odontoblasts elaborate an acid mucopolysaccharide which concentrates in granules at the base of the odontoblast process. Subsequently these granules are extruded into the matrix where the polysaccharide becomes concentrated in the interfibrillar spaces and to come extent on the collagen fibers. The onset of mineralization occurs in the patches of mucopolysaccharide, later also on the fibers. It appears that the presence of an acid mucopolysaccharide is a prerequisit for mineralization in the dental matrix.

    Notes: Experiments were conducted on the incisor of young rats to show (1) the precise areas and manner in which the tetracycline fluorophore combines with dentin and enamel and (2) the relation between the tetracycline localization and mineralization. For the objectives mentioned above rats were injected with tetracycline and a combination of tetracycline and Ca45. Detailed examination of the teeth of specimens injected with tetracycline show a rapid uptake and localization of fluorophore in areas undergoing mineralization. Areas adjacent to the increments undergoing mineralization also reveal the presence of the fluorophore, but to a lesser extent. Comparison of the same area of the tooth injected with tetracycline and Ca45 show that the fluorophore is localized exclusively in areas undergoing mineralization, and to a lesser extent in adjacent, incompletely mineralized regions.Despite the fact that our observations have demonstrated the avidity tetracycline exhibits for mineralizing and recently mineralized areas of dentin and enamel, we have not been able to exclude the possibility that the fluorophore may combine with the organic matrix of these tissues as well as the mineral component.

    Notes: The ultrathin sections of the developing otolith of mouse fetuses 15.5 days to 20 days after birth were observed with the aid of the electron microscope.The first step of otolith formation is an aggregation of organic clusters observed in the sacculus of the 15.5-day fetus. These organic structures are modified and assume a hexagonal shape in the 17.5-day fetus. The unmineralized stages of the otolith referred to as the preotolith, serve as the template for future development.One day after birth, at either end of the preotolith, minute tube-like structures develop in which needle-shaped crystallites are initiated. Crystallites continue to develop throughout the hexagonal template which give rise to a structure containing many regularly arranged needle-shaped crystallites. Based on the present observations, the mouse otolith is considered a multi-iso-oriented crystal.

    Notes: An electron microscope study was made of the human peridental ligament of the young adult. Examination of several cells which occur in this site exhibit a marked variation in number and distribution of organelles. The fibrous components made up chiefly, if not entirely, of collagen fibers averaged 600 Å in diameter. These fibers usually referred to as principal fibers show an arrangement both in the peridental space proper and also at the surface of the root of a marked irregularity, more so than can be ascertained at the optical level. Our study shows that the arrangement of the principal fibers is more complex than previously described and further that many of the diverse cells present in the peridental space are in an active functional state indicative of the dynamic potential they possess in reference to fibrilogenesis, cementogenesis and osteogenesis in this area.

    Notes: A study of the brinchial epithelium in representative specimens of Cyclostomata Elasmobranchii and Teleostei fishes has been made, with special reference to the following: 1) the importance of physiological role of osmotic regulation effected by the gills; 2) the presence or absence of specialized secretory tissue; 3) progressive evolution of the fishes and the possible phylogenetic difference between them. In regard to these topics we find: 1) There is no indication of any specialization in the branchial epithelium of fishes indicating a special role in extrarenal excretion. 2) In the respiratory epithelium of fishes widely separated phylogenetically or in fishes in living in fresh or salt water, the only significant differences are that in general the teleosts have a squamous type of epithelium, whereas, the elasmobranchs have in general a thicker polyhedral investment. 3) Mucous cells appear large and numerous on the filament proper, smaller and less numerous in the interlamellar spaces, and on the free surface of the lamellae. These are the only specialized secretory cells which occur in the gills.
