    Notes: Summary DuringAcanthocheilonema viteae infection, the specific activity of γ-glutamyltranspeptidase (γ-GT) increased in peritoneal exudate cells and bone marrow and decreased in lymphnodes ofMastomys natalensis throughout the course of infection. However, though there was an increase in specific activity of γ-GT in thymus and spleen during the prepatent phase ofA. viteae infection, the level either returned to normal or decreased during the latent phase of infection. A close correlation was observed between the host's immune status duringA. viteae infection and the level of γ-GT in lymphoid tissues.

    Notes: Abstract Earlier studies on Hanuman langurs (Presbytis entellus) around Jodhpur found them entirely vegetarian (Mohnot, 1974;Winkler, 1988). However, recent observations in the open scrub forests of Jodhpur reveal that scale insects may constitute a regular part of their diet and that insectivory is particularly prevalent in the monsoon months July – September. The insect eating in this habitat seems to support the “Energy/nutrient maximization” hypothesis ofHamilton andBusse (1978).

    Notes: Abstract β-Picolinium-p-chlorophenacylide (β-PCFY) acts as a retarder for polymerization of N-vinyl pyrrolidone. The polymerization runs were carried out at 60°C using benzene as an inert solvent. The kinetic equation for the present system may be written asR p α[β-PCPY]−1.0 [AIBN]0.66[N-VP]1.0. The value of overall energy of activation for polymerization in presence and absence ofβ-PCPY was computed as 44.0 and 42.3 kJ mol−1, respectively. The inverse relationship ofR p and¯M v withβ-PCPY suggests thatβ-PCPY acts as a polymerization retarder. The retarding effect is also evidenced by higher initiator exponent value and higher value of energy of activation in presence of ylide. A mechanism is also proposed in which polymer propagating chain combines with one ylide component to give resonance stabilized radical.

    Notes: Abstract During a 10-year long term study, 6 eye-witnessed and 1 pressumed cases of abortions occurred in 3 one-male bisexual troops of free ranging langurs (Presbytis entellus) near Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India. The age of the unborns varied from 35 to about 200 days. The subsequent birth interval ranged between 7.1–21.1 months. 2 miscarriages occurred during stable periods of residency of a single male. 5 cases occurred prior to or after infanticide in connection with male changes. In one case a female was attacked by the new male before she aborted. In one case a female presumably aborted after attacks on her semiweaned infant. Most of the reproductive losses hence seem to be related to psychical and physical stress exerted by new males on pregnant females. As part of their reproductive strategy, males reduce their waiting time to insemination in this way. Abortions may likewise represent an adaptive reproductive strategy of females, who prefer to abort instead of investing in a foetus which is likely to be killed after birth.

    Notes: Radical copolymerization of zinc acrylate (ZnA2) with acrylonitrile (AN), initiated by As2S3-styrene complex(I), in dimethyl Sulphoxide (DMSO) at 90 ± 0.1°C for 1.0h under inert atmosphere, yields non-alternating copolymers. The kinetic expression is Rp ∝ [I]0.33 [ZnA2]0.25 [AN]0.44, i.e. the system follows non-ideal kinetics, which is due to primary radical termination as well as degradative chain transfer reactions. The values for activation energy (E) and k2p/kt are 128kJ mol-1 and 8.57 × 10-7 litre mol-1 s-1, respectively. Thermal stability, solubility in different solvents, and IR and NMR spectra have been evaluated.
