Abstract Procedural differences were examined to account for interlaboratory discrepancies in open-field defecation (OFD) scores of the Maudsley reactive and Maudsley nonreactive strains. It was found that the use of a continuous 24-h light diurnal cycle was associated with increased OFD in Maudsley reactive and nonreactive rats. If a 15-h light/9-h dark diurnal cycle was used, OFD scores typical of the progenitors of the Maudsley strains were obtained.
