Notes: Summary Sham-operated and pinealectomized male rats were maintained at 14h light: 10 h dark cycles (lights-on 5.00 h) and injected daily, for 14 days, with oxazepam or vehicle.125I-melatonin binding was recorded in synaptosomes prepared at 10.00, 18.00, and 24.00 h from the hypothalamus, hippocampus and medulla-pons of the rats. In the sham-operated, vehicle treated rats, specific125I-melatonin binding in all brain areas studied was higher at 18.00 h, whereas in the oxazepam-treated animals, binding was higher at 24.00 h than at the other times tested. In the pinealectomized, vehicle-treated rats, the binding recorded at 18.00 h in all three brain areas, was lower than at the other times of day tested. Oxazepam treatment decreased125I-melatonin binding at 24.00 h in the hippocampus and medulla-pons of the pinealectomized rats and did not significantly affect the binding in the hypothalamus. These results indicate the ability of oxazepam, pinealectomy and their combination, to manipulate the diurnal variations in125I-melatonin binding sites in the rat brain.

Notes: Summary In 17 male Wistar rats in antidiuresis 10 different nephron segments and arteries are identified with the aid of Lowry's technique, dissected and total-and (Mg++)-adenosintriphosphatase (=ATPase) determined. (Na+K+)-activated ATPase in the distal tubule is four to five times (max. eight times) more active than in the proximal segment. This difference of activity may speak for a high pump mechanism mediated by the way of a (Na+K+)-activated enzyme system in the distal nephron and for a partially passive reabsorption of sodium from the proximal convolution.

Notes: Summary With three phosphohydrolases, i. e. alkaline phosphatase (Na+K+), ATPase and (Mg++) ATPase, a segmentation of the proximal tubule and a marked difference between the short (superficial) and long (Juxtamedullary) nephron is revealed by quantitative histochemistry. With the exception of the superficial nephron of the male rat, alkaline phosphatase activity increases along the proximal tubule independent of sex. (Na+K+) ATPase and (Mg++) ATPase show in both types of nephrons a decrease of activity along the proximal tubule. The juxtamedullary nephron is more active than the superficial. Parallelism of the site of avtivity for alkaline phosphatase and the location of reabsorption of phosphate ions is discussed. Morphological and physiological data from the literature are brought into connexion with the enzymatic changes of a (Na+K+) ATPase activity decrease.

Notes: Summary PGE2 was shown to play an essential role in the gonado-inhibiting effect of melatonin in Syrian hamsters by transforming the neuroendocrine signal to gonadal reactivity. Prostaglandin is a vital link in the transduction of photoperiodic information into gonadal function and the difference in its levels brought about by melatonin given at different times of the day could explain the phenomenon why gonadal involution occurs only upon administration of melatonin towards the end of the day. It appears also that the melatonin signal is decoded in the pituitary, probably involving the short loop negative feedback of LH on LH-RH hormones.

Notes: Complex Catalysis. XV. Cationic η3-Allyl-bis(triorganylphosphite)nickel(II) Complexes as Catalysts for the Stereoregular Butadiene PolymerisationSynthesis and catalytic properties of [C3H5NiL2]PF6 complexes 1a-f with L = tri-ethyl-, -isopropyl-, -phenyl-, -o-tolyl-, -thymyl- and o-biphenylylphosphite are described. It is shown how electronic and steric effects of the phosphite ligands in these complexes control their catalytic activity and selectivity in 1,4-polymerization of butadiene.

Notes: The enantiomers of Propranolol, Pindolol, and Carazolol, well-known β-blockers, have been used to prepare cationic aminophosphine phosphinite rhodium complexes. Propraphos-Rh and Pindophos-Rh are very efficient catalysts in the asymmetric hydrogenation of N-Boc-protected unusual dehydroamino acid derivatives. Carazolol-Rh is less suitable in both activity and enantioselectivity. Under the same conditions, N-Boc-protected dehydrodipeptides are hydrogenated with diastereoselectivities between 70 and 90% de. Notes: Substituted N-Cbz and N-Boc protected arylamino acrylic acids and esters have been prepared and used in asymmetric hydrogenations catalyzed by PROPRAPHOSRh. Stereoselectivities 〉 90% ee could be achieved, the rate of which is dependent on the position of the substituent in the aromatic ring. The N-Boc derivatives provide advantages compared with the N-Cbz analogues. The amino acid derivatives were fully characterized by 19F, 13C, and 1H NMR spectroscopy. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
