Notes: Abstract There is controversy as to whether zidovudine (ZDV) induces a mitochondrial myopathy that is distinguishable from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated myopathy in ZDV-naive patients. Mitochondrial abnormalities were evaluated in skeletal muscle obtained from 18 HIV-positive, ZDV-exposed patients, and 9 who were drug naive. All patients had clinical myopathy, and underwent neuromuscular evaluation with information recorded on timing and dosage of ZDV. All underwent muscle biopsies and samples were examined without knowledge of clinical history or ZDV status. Biopsy samples were evaluated by light and electron microscopy. Mitochondrial abnormalities were seen in ZDV-treated and -naive groups, and did not correlate with ZDV exposure or cumulative ZDV dosage. Mitochondrial abnormalities displayed significant correlation with the presence and severity of myofiber degeneration on biopsy, regardless of ZDV status. As mitochondrial abnormalities reflect myofiber degeneration, present in both patient groups, they may not be used as evidence of primary mitochondrial dysfunction. The etiology of myofiber degeneration in patients with HIV infection, whether ZDV-exposed or -naive, remains unclear.

Notes: Abstract The need to train accurate, not necessarily agreeing, observers is discussed. Intraobserver consistency as an intermediate criterion in such training is proposed and contrasted with the more familiar criterion of interobserver agreement. Videotaped observations of social interactions between handicapped and nonhandicapped preschoolers provided the medium for examining the criterion agreement of four observers trained against each type of standard. Observers generally failed to show high levels of criterion agreement whether trained to a within- or to a between-observer agreement standard. The results varied somewhat with the frequency of behaviors, however. Correlations between interobserver agreement and intraobserver consistency were variable but somewhat higher when interobserver agreement was the training criterion than when intraobserver consistency was the criterion. Correlations between interobserver agreement and criterion agreement ranged from — .16 to .89 during interobserver agreement training. Correlations between intraobserver consistency and criterion agreement ranged from — .23 to .99 during intraobserver consistency training.

Notes: Abstract The present study addressed the impact of an urban police force laying criminal charges in cases of wife abuse. Follow-up data from battered women and from police officers were collected to identify the long-term consequences of this police policy that began in 1981, including any negative or unintended side effects. Results indicated that the policy resulted in a dramatic increase in police-laid charges (2500%), and a shift from the Family to the Criminal Division of Provincial Court. Based on interview data, victims did not decrease their requests for police service (a feared side effect) and reported a significantly higher level of satisfaction with police service in this area. A significant reduction in police calls and victim-reported violence was associated with police intervention, especially when charges were laid. Paradoxically, police officers' attitudes about the policy were more negative than the actual positive changes that they helped to produce. Considerations for future research and professional training are outlined.
