Notes: Abstract An actinometric method to determine the rate constantk 1D of O(1D) formation by ozone photolysis in the troposphere and at higher altitudes is presented. N2O is used as a scavenger gas for O(1D), and the molecular nitrogen product measured after gas chromatographic separation. First results of the method for ground level and for 26 km altitude are reported and compared with theoretical estimates ofk 1D for these levels.

Notes: Abstract A liquid jet of 90 μm diameter and variable length has been utilized to determine absorption rates and, hence, mass accommodation coefficients γ, of atmospheric trace gases. The compounds investigated are HCl (γ≥0.01), HNO3 (γ≥0.01), N2O5 (γ≥0.005), peroxyacetyl nitrate (γ〉0.001), and HONO (γ≥0.005). It is concluded that the absorption of these trace gases by liquid atmospheric water is not significantly retarded by interfacial mass transport. The strengths and limitations of the liquid jet technique for measuring mass accommodation coefficients are explored.
