Notes: The temperature dependence of the water self-diffusion coefficients (D), as well as those of low- and high-field (stationary and time-dependent) specific conductivities (K), have been determined in the percolation regime of ternary mixtures of water, AOT, and oil. For the first time a pronounced similarity in the behavior of D and κ was detected giving instructive hints about the large variations in the specific conductivities of these systems. Results from kinetic and stationary experiments are consistent with a network-structure model of micro phases in the percolation regime in which the micro phases retain their discrete character.

Notes: The occurrence of a negative birefringence in water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsions has been substantiated and analyzed. The analysis is based on the well-established aqueous nanodroplet model of W/O microemulsions. In the particularly investigated water/sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT)/aliphatic oil systems, the AOT monolayer exhibits a negative induced intrinsic birefringence, which is brought about by the pronounced polarizability of the alkyl moiety of the AOT molecule approximately perpendicular to the direction of its permanent dipolement.

Notes: Solutions of blockcopolymers (POE-b-PI-b-POE) in fluids of interacting aqueous nanodroplets (W/O microemulsions) are studied. The interaction strength between the (pseudo) two components is measured by the shift of the percolation temperature relative to that of the pure microemulsion. A quantitative measure of the interaction, the differential heat of solution, is thermodynamically related to the slopes of the equilibrium temperature of the system with varying monomeric nanodroplet concentration and the experimental percolation line in the presence of copolymer.

Notes: The water activity and its temperature dependence as a function of the amount of water in the L2-phase of the (water/Aerosol OT/isooctane)-system (s. Exper. Part) was determined with the help of a differential pressure gauge and a precision cathetometer. A theoretical approach based essentially upon a solution of the Poisson-Boltzmann equation with appropriate boundary conditions led to a description of the activity plot in excellent agreement with experimental results.

Notes: O'Konski's considerations regarding the distortion of spherical droplets by electric fields in binary two-phase systems has been extended to three-component water/surfactant/oil systems with so-called ultra-low interfacial tensions, i.e. spherically aqueous microphases. It is shown that the deformation is almost negligible for fields up to about 5 105 Vm-1 such as those applied in electro-optical Kerr-effect measurements with microemulsions if only perturbations of the mean orientation of the surfactants in the interface are considered.

Notes: The formation of a so-called water/oil (W/O)-microemulsion (AOT/isooctane/water) was followed by light scattering and ultracentrifuge measurements. With increasing weighed-in water concentrations the microemulsion is stabilized by repeated aggregational processes of micelles containing water due to a decrease of the free interfacial enthalpy. This process conforms very satisfactorily to a model describing an adsorption of surfactants at the water/hydrocarbon interface resulting from dipole-image dipole interactions.

Notes: Experimental investigations on the cosurfactant effect of alkali and tetraalkylammonium choleates in water/AOT/cyclohexane (W/O)-microemulsions were carried out. The results prompted considerations on a thermodynamic and molecular level. The molecular view emphasizes the significance of hydration interactions between cosurfactant and solubilized water.

Notes: Calorimetric Investigations of the Effect of Water on the Solution Process of Aerosol OT in Apolar Media.Heats of solution of Aerosol OT in apolar solvents are influenced considerably by already small amounts of water. Calorimetric investigations of the solution process with differently dried surfactant and solvent samples showed the predominating effect on the heats of hydration with regard to the ionic and polar groups of the surfactant. Only if the hydration is finished prior to the process of solution, the latter is endothermic. An estimation of the various enthalpic contributions demonstrates that the destruction of the coherence of the built-in water within the surfactant is decisive in the latter case. Two models corresponding to definite structures of the liquid crystalline mesophase of the surfactant show very satisfactory agreement with the experimental ΔH-values.

Notes: Photon correlation studies in H2O/sodium di-2-ethylhexylsulfosuccinate (AOT)/i-C8H18-systems, pertinent IR. investigations, and vapor pressure osmometric measurements with alkylated quaternary ammonium di-2-ethylhexylsulfosuccinates strongly suggest water to be pre-requistite for the micellization in apolar media.
