Notes: Reduction of selenous acid by certain carboxylic acids in presence of small quantities of KMnO4 has been studied. The observed enhanced reducing power of the carboxylic acids treated with KMnO4 towards selenous acid has been explained as being due to the formation of intermediate oxidation products of varying degree of stability, which strongly reduce selenous acid. In a few cases the presence of definite oxidation products has been indirectly proved. The results obtained are, in general, similar to those of gold chloride-carboxylic acid reactions studied by MACMAHON and SRIVASTAVA.

Notes: From solutions of Th(NO3)4 and K2X (X = malonate, succinate and adipate) taken in different molar ratios, the following compounds were isolated: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \begin{array}{l} {\rm Th}({\rm C}_3 {\rm H}_2 {\rm O}_4)_2 \cdot 2{\rm H}_2 {\rm O},{\rm K}_2 {\rm Th}({\rm C}_3 {\rm H}_2 {\rm O}_4)_3, \\ {\rm Th}({\rm C}_4 {\rm H}_4 {\rm O}_4)_2 {\rm \,\,and \,\,Th}({\rm C}_2 {\rm H}_8 {\rm O}_2). \\ \end{array} $$\end{document}Conductometric and heterometric titrations carried out in the systems Th(NO3)4—K2X—H2O besides confirming the existence of the above compounds indicate the presence of yet another specie (ThX)++ in all these systems. Attempts at isolation of this last specie kowever, failed because of the ease with which it was decomposed into ThX2. The system Th(NO3)4—K2C2O4—H2O has also been studied for the sake of the completeness of the investigation.

Notes: Thallous salts of malonato complexes of Al, Ga, Cr and Zr have been prepared in the crystalline state and their compositions determined. The corresponding manganic complex being extremely unstable and very highly soluble could not be obtained in the solid state.

Notes: The interaction between sodium succinate and thorium chloride solutions in presence of glucose solutions of suitable concentrations has been investigated adopting conductometric and potentiometric titration methods. The experimental data shows the formation of the normal disuccinate, Th (C4H4O4)2, near about the point of equivalence, where the ratio of metal : succinate is nearly 1:2. In the absence of glucose solutions a highly unstable colloidal solution is obtained. Addition of peptiser viz., glucose, increases the stability and the rapid precipitation of the dispersed phase is controlled in a manner as to give stable and transparent gels. The conductometric and potentiometric titration curves are explained.

Notes: A detailed study on the composition, stability and analytical applications of Rare Earth chelates with Aluminon, Chrome Azurol S, Thoron, Chromotrope 2B and Alizarin Red S have been described. The composition have been ascertained spectrophotometrically using the Method of Continuous Variations, Mole Ratio Method and the Slope Ratio Method. The range for adherence to BEER'S law, sensitivity and other optimum conditions required in the analytical applications have been described.

Notes: The migratory aptitude of the ethoxycarbonyl group in the pinacol rearrangement was deduced from the structure of the products observed after treatment of 2-substituted 2,3-dihydroxy-3-phenylbutyrates with fluorosulfonic acid at 0° for 3 minutes. The migratory aptitude of ethoxycarbonyl is comparable to that of ethyl, greater than that of methyl or hydrogen, but smaller than that of phenyl. Cyclization and fragmentation reactions were also observed.
