Notes: Two ganglioside molecular species [LG-1 (1) and LG-2 (5)] have been obtained from the water-soluble lipid fraction of the chloroform/methanol extract of the starfish Astropecten latespinosus. On the basis of chemical and spectroscopic findings, the structure of 1 and 5 have been elucidated. They are new ganglioside molecular species. Negative FAB mass spectrometry provided important information both on the structure of the sugar moiety and on the molecular mass of the gangliosides. Partial hydrolysis by hot water has proved useful for structure elucidation of the complex oligosaccharide moieties. In addition, the major ganglioside molecular species, LG-2 (5), shows antitumor activity against murine lymphoma L1210 cells in vitro.

Description / Table of Contents: Biologisch aktive Glycoside aus Asteroidea, XVI.
Notes: Two further new oligoglycosides sulfates named pectinioside E (1) and F (2) were isolated from aqueous extracts of the whole bodies of Asterina pectinifera Müller et Troschel, after separation by column chromatography on silica gel, RP-8, and Sephadex LH-20. Their structures have been elucidated by chemical and spectroscopic means. In addition, we examined the antitumor effect of pectiniosides A, B, C, D, E, and F against murine lymphoma L1210 cells and human epidermoid carcinoma KB cells in vitro.

Description / Table of Contents: Biologisch aktive Glycoside aus Asteroidea, XVIII.
Notes: The acetates of polyhydroxylated steroids obtained from the starfish Asterina pectinifera Müller et Troschel were studied by 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The 1H-NMR spectra of five kinds of acetates of polyhydroxylated cholestanes were measured in deuteriochloroform and deuteriopyridine solutions and then compared. Marked differences were observed between the spectra obtained in both solvents. The spectra in deuteriopyridine were more useful than those in deuteriochloroform in providing information on the structure of the parent polyhydroxylated cholestanes. The isolation and structures of the two new polyhydroxylated cholestanes 1 and 8 are also described. Moreover, the antitumor activities of some polyhydroxylated steroids from this starfish were examined.

Notes: From the whole body of sea cucumber Cucumaria echinata (Cucumariidae), we recently identified six genuine holostane-type triterpenoid glycoside sulfates designated as cucumechinoside A (1), B (2), C (3), D (4), E (5), and F (6). The structures 1-6 were determined on the basis of chemical and spectral investigations. Antitumor activities of these cucumechinosides and their solvolized compounds (10, 11, and 12) against murine lymphoma L 1210 and human epidermoid carcinoma KB cell in vitro were examined, and their antifungal and antiprotozoal activities were also investigated.
