Notes: Summary After extension and creep due to a constant load the taenia coli of the guinea pig shows plastic deformation. The deformation is partially abolished by complete unloading: to 51% in the relaxed and to 83% in the depolarized = contracted state. The quantitative relations between creep (N) and its time derivative (dN/dt) as well as those between stress relaxation (R) and dR/dt stated in our previous papers, remain valid if plastic deformations have occurred during these processes.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusameenfassung 1.
Notes: Summary 1. The spontaneous electrical activity of the taenia coli of the guinea pig was investigated by extracellular and in some experiments also by intracellular electrodes, the corresponding mechanical activity being registered by isometrical or isotonical recording. 2. Synchronization or desynchronization of the extracellular electrogram was quantitatively determined by an empiric formula. The “Synchronization Index” of this formula varies between 1.0 (complete synchronization) and 0 (complete desynchronization). In Krebs-Henseleit solution of 37°C the mean of this index varies between 0.4 and 0.6. 3. Ca++ in excess (unto 4 mM) did not improve the synchronization. 4. The indexS decreased from 0.94–0.17 if the temperature of the bath was increased from 28–40°C. 5. Lowering (0.6–0.9 isoosmolar) as well as slightly increasing (1.1–1.6 isoosmolar) the osmotic pressure of the bath decreased the indexS in a significant manner. However in a strong hypertonic solution (1.7–2.5 isoosmolar by adding sucrose) synchronization was improved. 6. Tetracaine did not alter our index if the preparation was mechanically working under isometric conditions. Only under isotonic conditions a significant increase of the synchronization was seen. 7. The results are discussed with regard to current views about the causes of desynchronization of the excitation in smooth muscles.

Notes: Abstract  Pelvic bone injuries are infrequent complications of radiotherapy. However, insufficiency fractures in irradiated pelvic bones may be underdetected, particularly in postmenopausal women. We describe the clinical presentation, radiologic evaluation, and course of disease in three patients with postradiation pelvic insufficiency fractures. Differential diagnosis included metastatic disease, tumor recurrence, and second malignancy. Recognition of radiographic features may prevent unnecessary, possibly morbid treatments.
