Notes: Abstract The oxidation of carbon monoxide on platinum surfaces is investigated by field ion microscopy (FIM) and compared to earlier work by field electron microscopy (FEM). The reaction gas is used as the field ion imaging gas at pressures of 〈 10−4 mbar and at temperatures of the catalytic reaction. In FIM the surface is imaged by O 2 + -ions which are preferentially ionized at oxygen-covered surface areas. During temperature variations regions of bistability could be detected by FEM and FIM. Finally self-sustained isothermal oscillations of the catalytic CO-oxidation could be measured from the periodic fluctuations of the O 2 + -field ion current. Atomic resolution shows that the Pt-(331) planes are the pace makers of the oscillation.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigation of Damage Progression in CFRP with a Variety of Fiber-Resin Combinations by Acoustic Energy MeasurementsUltimate stress or strain values obtained by static tests on CFRP yield no information about the onset of severe damage progression. With respect to an optimal utilization of this light-weight material, however, ist would be useful to know the strain value where catastrophic damage propagation begins. Acoustic emission (AE) analysis is an appropriate technique for the characterization of damage progression, since even weak alterations in the material occurring in an early stage of loading may be detected. The energy is the most important AE parameter measured. The significance of accumulated AE energy, correlated with strain, is superior to that of common event or count evaluations.Five types of fibers where combined with two epoxy resins and four bismaleimides. The influence of fiber/resin-composition was investigated using ring specimens with unidirectional fiber orientation. Characteristic strain levels have been found for most of the materials under test.

Notes: The initial state of metal oxidation has been investigated by several experimental techniques. Field ion microscopy and field ion mass spectrometry offer methods which are particularly capable of elucidating details of the oxidation mechanism.Early observations of metal oxidation are summarized and recent work is discussed in respect to the oxidation of different metals (W, Ru, Cu) and of silicon. The importance of electrostatic fields for metal oxidation can be demonstrated by experimental results. External electrostatic fields in the order of 108 V/cm can be produced and their influences studied in a controlled manner.
