Polythiophene and substituted polythiophene can be electrochemically generated as very adhesive thin films or as thick powdery deposits. The homogeneity of the thin films is very high, but it decreases when the film thickness is increased. Scanning electron microscopy shows that the nature of the dopant strongly influences the film morphology. Transmission electron microscopy reveals mainly a fibrillar structure, with a fibril diameter of 200 Å in the undoped state, and 800 Å in the doped conducting state.
