Notes: Syntheses of parent polyaniline and methyl, methoxy, and ethoxy ortho-substituted polyanilines were performed using the conventional chemical methodology and monitored using the new open-circuit-potential (Voc) profile technique. The intermediate pernigraniline oxidation state was identified and isolated at the Voc maximum (A) during the conventional chemical synthesis of poly(o-methoxyaniline) in the emeraldine oxidation state. The introduction of the substituent on the aniline ring leads to longer polymerization times and lower Voc values. Syntheses in the presence of two different monomers in solution were also investigated and showed preferential polymerization of the monomer with the lowest Voc potential. All polymers produced were characterized by elemental analysis, gel permeation chromatography, UV-VIS spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The influence of the substituent on the Voc profile and on the polymer characteristics are rationalized in terms of steric and electronic effects. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The results of an initial study of the microwave properties of low-density foamlike (CH)x are reported for intermediate dopant levels. The electrical conductivity and dielectric constant are obtained at microwave frequencies, and the results are analyzed in terms of effective medium theory. The possibility of utilizing the doped foamlike (CH)x as an efficient microwave absorber is discussed.

Notes: The tensile properties of both cis- and trans-polyacetylene, (CH)x, were investigated in order to determine the variables that influence that ultimate extension ratio (l/l0) of polyacetylene films. It was found that when cis-films of polyacetylene were extended in an inert (argon) atmosphere, ultimate extension ratios as high as 3.3 were obtained and with subsequent isomerization at 160-200°C under stress, a final l/l0, of about 4 was obtained. The extension ratio is extremely sensitive to exposure to oxygen and decreases markedly after periods as short as 1 min. It appears as though crosslinking may occur in the polymer when it is exposed to air and this produces brittleness in the specimen. When (CH)x was isomerized from cis to trans, it became brittle, even in the absence of air.

Notes: The results of measurements of the optical absorption spectra, IR absorption spectra, thermogravimetric analysis, and elementary analysis of pyrolyzed polyacrilonitrile are presented as a function of the pyrolysis temperature Tp and of the duration of pyrolysis. At Tp ∼ 200°C, an intermediate phase was discovered, containing conjugated CN sequences and a completely unreacted carbon backbone. The optical absorption data imply that the resulting polymer is a semiconductor with a delocalized π-electron system and an energy gap Eg ⋍ 2.5 eV. For Tp 〉 260°C, the weight loss rapidly increases, and the absorption edge gradually broadens and shifts to lower energies. The resulting polymer (after higher-temperature pyrolysis) contains CN and C=C—C conjugation sequences, but appears to be a complex structure consisting of a mixture of different chemical species.
