Notes: Direct polycondensation of 3-substituted-4-hydroxybenzoic acid was carried out in solutions of styrene-butadiene block copolymers (SBS) at room temperature in the presence of triphenylphosphine and hexachloroethane as an initiator for the direct polycondensation of these monomers. Solution casting after the direct polycondensation provided opaque films in which the aromatic polyester was finely dispersed within the matrix of SBS. Mechanical properties of these films were examined by tensile tests. A great improvement of tensile strength was achieved by the incorporation of phenyl substituent in the resulting polyester. In-situ direct polycondensation leads to the formation of new composites of rigid polymers and flexible polymers. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Sebacates from alcohols having a 1,4-pyrone nucleus were synthesized, and their reactivities toward diamine were investigated. The polycondensation reactions of di(6-hydroxymethyl-1,4-pyron-3-yl) sebacate or di(2-methyl-1,4-pyron-3-yl) sebacate with hexamethylenediamine took place easily even at room temperature to form a high molecular weight nylon 610 in a quantitative yield. The reactivities of these active diesters with diamine were much higher than that of the corresponding diphenyl ester and were almost comparable to those of acid chlorides. It was also found that inorganic salts such as lithium chloride, zinc chloride, or calcium chloride had a strong influence on the molecular weight of the resulting polyamide. The reactivity enhancement of the active diesters toward aminolysis could be attributed mainly to the acidic character of the leaving group.

Notes: Direct polycondensation of various nylon salts (salts of dicarboxylic acid and diamine) took place under mild conditions in the formation of polyamide in the presence of polyphosphates and organic bases. Among organic bases imidazole was the best in terms of polymer yields. The reactivity of the polyphosphates was arranged in following order: pyrophosphate ≅ tripolyphosphate 〉 tetrapolyphosphate. Otimum reaction conditions were investigated in terms of solvents, temperatures, and concentration of monomers. A reaction mechanism was proposed for the phosphorylation reaction, due to polyphosphates, which led to the direct polycondensation of nylon salts.

Notes: Fully aromatic polyamide containing pyridine moieties (PPy) were successfully synthesized either by interfacial or solution polycondensation to prepare polyamide with inherent viscosity as high as 4. Solution properties of PPy in sulfuric acid were investigated in terms of solution viscosity and lyotropic behavior. The polyamide had a better solubility in sulfuric acid than in poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PT) and the PPy solution in sulfuric acid exhibited an optically anisotropic property in a wider range of concentrations at relatively low temperatures in comparison with the PT solution. Viscosities of the PPy solution and the film cast from the PPy solution indicated a phenomenon characteristic of a highly oriented rigid polymer molecule caused by a lyotropic behavior.

Notes: The polycondensation reaction of dimethyl tartrate (DMT) with hexamethylenediamine (HMD) was carried out in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) at 60°C in the presence of various polymer matrices, which were expected to interact with DMT or the resulting polyamide which had pendant hydroxyl groups due to hydrogen bonding. It was found that the rate of polycondensation was enhanced by polymer matrices such as poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP), Pullulan (polysaccharide) (PF), and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The rate enhancement became more pronounced with increasing molecular weight of the polymer matrix. When polycondensation in the presence of PVA was carried out in DMSO, a polymer complex was produced. The formation of the polymer complex between the resulting polyamide and PVA during polycondensation was dependent on the concentration of monomers and also on PVA; a gelation of the solution was observed at a concentration of PVA.

Notes: Separation of various alcohols and water through a membrane was carried out by means of a hydrogen-bonding interaction. A membrane obtained from poly(maleimide-co-acrylonitrile) was effective for a selective separation of water from aqueous alcohol solution by pervaporation technique. Spectroscopic analyses verified that this high selectivity was attributed to the hydrogen-bonding interaction between water and maleimide units in the membrane.

Notes: The sequence distribution of repeating units of copolyamides from different diamines with isophthaloyl or terephthaloyl chlorides and dithiophenyl adipate have been investigated either by interfacial or solution methods to aim at the sequence control of the copolyamides by solvents.Copolycondensation of dithiophenyl adipate and isophthaloyl chloride with m-xylylenediamine in various solvents yielded copolyamides having different compositions of repeating units. Aprotic polar solvents produced random copolyamides having the same compositions as feed ratios of the comonomers, while nonpolar solvents yielded copolyamides rich in isophthaloyl units. Also the sequence distribution of the copolyamides from m- and p-phenylenediamines with isophthaloyl chloride was affected by solvents; nonpolar solvents produced copolyamides having a less-random and block character of the repeating units either by interfacial or solution methods.
