Notes:
Summary The first results of 140 mesh plug repairs for groin hernias are reported retrospectively. The procedures were performed by 4 surgeons who were totally free to choose mesh plug repair in every individual case. From January 1995 to October 1997 the choice of this operation increased from 20% to 54%. The operation was performed with slight modifications of the original technique as described by Rutkow and Robbins. 84% of the patients were available to follow-up (median 34 months, extremes 3 to 58). Results can be considered as good concerning the recurrence rate (0.9%) but tolerance of the material remains questionable: 7 patients (6.3%) experienced long-lasting pain in the groin leading to plug removal in 2 cases. These data must be considered and need further evaluation.
