Notes:
Summary Schlipköter and Brockhaus found that poly(2-vinylpyridine 1-oxide) (PVNO) will inhibit the fibrosis that normally follows the inhalation of silica dust by animals. There is some doubt about the molecular weight of the polymer that is most effective. PVNO has been separated into fractions containing different ranges of molecular sizes and each fraction has been administered to mice by intraperitoneal injection. PVNO with a molecular weight below about 40000 is rapidly excreted. PVNO with a higher molecular weight may be retained.
