Notes: An investigation has been carried out of the interaction of optically active tris(ethylenediamine)-Co(III) and of tris(o-phenanthroline)-Ni(II) complex ions with different polyelectrolytes in dilute aqueous solution. Optical rotatory dispersion measurements reveal that binding of the Co(III) complex ions occurs with a noticeable degree of specificity which in addition to depending on the nature of the fixed charges is also affected by the chemical constitution of the polyelectrolytes chain backbones. The dependence of tris(ethylenediamine)-Co(III) optical activity on polyelectrolyte concentration also exhibits interesting features. Polarimetric measurements of the rate of racemization of tris(o-phenanthroline)-Ni(II) ions in the presence of different polyelectrolytes lead to similar conclusions. Sodium dextran sulfate is shown to interact selectively with one of the antipodes of tris(phenanthroline)-Ni(II) complex.

Notes: The activity coefficient γNa+, of sodium ion, in aqueous solutions of both isotactic and conventional poly(methacrylic acid) (PMA) has been studies throughout the whole range of degree of neutralization α with a Beckman Na electrode and membrane electrodes. The results show that the fraction of sodium ions bound to isotactic PMA is higher than that bound to conventional (or syndiotactic) PMA over the entire range of α. The binding of divalent counterions (Mg+2, Cu+2, Co+2, and Ni+2) by the two forms of PMA (at α = 0.95) has been evaluated from the release of Na+ ions with the Beckman Na electrode. Turbidimetric determinations of the critical amount of various divalent cation chlorides necessary to bring about precipitation of both isotactic and conventional PMA (at α = 0.95) have also been carried out.

Description / Table of Contents: Die Konformation von Poly-L-glutaminsäure (PLGA) in Pyridin/Wasser-Gemischen wurde mit Hilfe verschiedener Techniken untersucht (ORD, IR, NMR und Viskosimetrie).
Notes: The conformational state of poly-L-glutamic acid (PLGA) in the mixed solvent pyridine/water has been studied by means of different techniques (ORD, IR, PMR, and viscosity). It has been found that at low water contents PLGA forms aggregates the stability of which depends in a sensitive manner on temperature and solvent composition. At higher water content PLGA undergoes a helix-coil transition.

Notes: Further direct evidences are given that a clear correlation exists between potentiometric and spectroscopic measurements in monitoring the poly(L-glutamic, acid) helix+ coil transtition. Specific Li+ ion poly (L-glUtamic acid) interactions have been observed, suresting that Li+ ions may exert a distinct destabilizing action on the helical conformation of the polyelectrolyte.

Notes: Three polysaccharides, Rhizobium leguminosarum 8002 EPS(I), Rhizobium trifolii TA1-EPS (II), Rhizobium leguminosarum 127K87 EPS (III), produced by bacteria of Rhizobium genus have been investigated by static and dynamic light scattering combined with chirooptical measurements. All three polymers have the same backbone but differ in the length of the side chains and in the content of minor substituents. An isothermal conformational transition coil → helix was observed with I and II by adding salt (NaCl). The molecular parameters of the polysaccharides in the ordered state were determined by light-scattering data. Increasing the ionic strength a shrinking of the helix was observed accompanied by a corresponding decrease in the radius of gyration. An extraordinary chain stiffness in terms of Kuhn segment lengths was found in both cases, similar to that already observed for other microbial polysaccharides. In the case of III no disorder → order transition was induced by the salt, and the scattering behavior corresponds to that of a rather flexible polymer with a characteristic ratio C∞ = 24. The incapability of III to form a helical structure is attributed to the effect of the very long side chain. The analysis of the time correlation functions revealed typical flexible chain behavior for all three polysaccharides. This behavior for the two ordered polymers is in agreement with a recent theory by Maggs and is due to bending modes of the rods. ©1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The enthalpy of dissociation of poly(acrylic acid) and of poly(methacrylic acid) in water and in 0.5N NaCl at 25°C has been measured over a wide range of degrees of neutralization of the polyelectrolytes. In the case of poly(methacrylic acid) the calorimetric data permit the direct evaluation of the enthalpy of conformational transition of the polymer. For this transition, with the aid of standard free energy data derived from potentiometric titrations, the change in entropy was also estimated. The relative accuracy of the thermodynamic data, and the possibility of deriving therefrom information on the mechanism of transitions of the type, globular coils → expanded coils for partially hydrophobic synthetic polyelectrolytes in aqueous solution are discussed.
