    Notes: Abstract Heat of dilution and of solution data are fitted to the form of equation corresponding to that used successfully for activity and osmotic coefficients over a wide range of concentrations. The resulting parameters give the change with temperature of the activity and osmotic coefficients. Results are reported for 84 electrolytes of 1-1, 2-1, 3-1, and 2-2 valence types.

    Notes: Abstract Equations previously developed and widely applied to the thermodynamic properties of strong electrolytes are extended to solutions involving a dissociation equilibrium. Excellent agreement is obtained with the data for pure phosphoric acid to 6M and for phosphate buffer solutions. The parameters of the strong electrolyte components of the buffer solutions are taken from other work, and the remaining parameters for H+, H2PO 4 − , and H3PO4 are evaluated, including a pK of 2.146. The present method avoids ambiguities which formerly arose in treating weak acids with as small pK as this.

    Notes: Abstract The extensive data for the osmotic coefficients, heats of dilution, and densities of aqueous solutions of rare earth chlorides, nitrates, and perchlorates are fitted to a single type of equation found satisfactory for many other solutes Good agreement is obtained. The various parameters do not show simple trends with cation radius. While there are some plausible explanations of these complexities, the total picture is far from clear.

    Notes: The glass transition temperatures of the poly(alkyl α-cyanocrylates) were determined by the dilatometric technique, and some of the values were checked by differential thermal analysis. The data indicate that the Tg's appear to decrease with increase in the size of the alkyl group, for a given molecular weight range. It was also found that the Tg of poly(methyl or butyl α-cyanoacrylate) increased with molecular weight. All cyanoacrylates, excepting methyl and ethyl esters, formed only low molecular weight polymers in aqueous surroundings. Therefore, they have characteristic low glass transition temperatures, causing coalescence at low temperatures.

    Notes: Methyl α-cyanoacrylate, when implanted subcutaneously in rats and dogs, has been shown to lead to an increase in thiocyanate output in the urine, presumably through the formation of cyanide anions which are subsequently converted to thiocyanate. It is postulated that this reaction may be one of the reactions contributing to tissue necrosis when methyl α-cyanoacrylate is used as a tissue adhesive.

    Notes: In an effort to obtain tissue adhesive monomers which would wet and spread on tissue substrates and be rapidly biodegradable, the branched esters of alkyl α-cyanoacrylates, as well as a 95-5 wt.-% mixture of n-heptyl and methyl α-cyanoacrylate, were studied. The data indicate that alkyl α-cyanoacrylates having branched alkoxy groups appear to be promising in this regard.

    Notes: Three monomers, β-14C-tagged methyl, n butyl, and n-heptyl α-cyanoacrylate, have been applied to intact skin and split-thickness skin-graft donor sites on rats. The data indicate that the urinary 14C activity is in the order: methyl 〉 n-butyl or n heptyl. Also, the urinary activity, when the monomers are applied to the split thickness skin graft donor sites, is approximately threefold greater than when the monomers are applied to intact skin. The conclusion is that the application of cyanoacrylate monomer to the skin is not only topical in nature, but may involve the internal milieu as well.

    Notes: Polymeric phthalyl peroxide was used as an initiator for the polymerization of styrene at 60°C. The peroxide is initially partially insoluble in the monomer, but decomposes and becomes soluble during the course of the polymerization. The intrinsic viscosity of the polymer formed increases with increasing conversion and at about 65-70% conversion becomes higher than would arise from a monoradical-initiated polymerization proceeding at the same rate.

    Notes: Liquid polymers of ethyl, n-butyl, and 2-ethylhexyl acrylates were prepared using an anionic initiating system. Liquid polyethyl acrylate was tested as a plasticizer in a stabilized and unstabilized polyvinyl chloride plastisol composition. In the unstabilized composition, fused samples were obtained which were comparable in color to a di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DOP) plasticized polyvinyl chloride sample prepared under the same conditions. Stress-strain tests on stabilized films indicated that with liquid polyethyl acrylate as the plasticizer a film was obtained showing higher tensile strength, yet equivalent ultimate elongation as compared to a similarly prepared DOP plasticized composition.
