Notes: Summary A new method for evaluating histamine antagonists in man is described based on diminution of the effects of intradermal histamine. The inter and intra subject variability of such effects is examined experimentally and previous descriptions reviewed. Measures are adopted to minimise the effects and so achieve maximum economy of drug administrations and subjects. The method is exemplified by comparisons of activity of different preparations of triprolidine and of cyclizine and chlorcycline.

Notes: The thermal degradation of perfluoropolypyridine was studied in inert and oxidizing atmospheres by thermogravimetric techniques. Volatile products were analyzed mass-spectrometrically, and the yield of products giving rise to fluoride ion was also determined. The stability of the polymer on a weight loss basis is rather better than that of polytetrafluoroethylene in inert atmospheres, but rather worse in oxidizing atmospheres. The major breakdown route seems to involve removal of the fluorine from the heterocyclic nucleus by a mechanism as yet unknown.

Notes: A number of perfluoro polymers were heated at a constant rate of temperature rise in an atmosphere of nitrogen or air, and the volatile degradation products were passed into an aqueous solution, where the F- ions produced were monitored with a fluoride ion-selective electrode. Compounds giving rise to F- ions were formed in both nitrogen and air, but in larger amounts in the latter atmosphere. For the formation of appreciable quantities of F- ions, temperatures greater than 500°C were normally necessary.

Notes: The evolution of hydrogen fluoride (or other degradation products giving rise to Fions in aqueous solution) from a number of hydrofluoro polymers has been studied in nitrogen or air over a range of temperatures using a fluoride ion selective electrode to monitor the process. The results in an inert atmosphere illustrate the effect of chemical structure upon the relative ease of hydrogen fluoride elimination.

Notes: The thermal degradation of meta- and para-linked perfluoropolyphenylenes in vacuo and in oxygen has been studied. Rates of breakdown were determined thermogravimetrically and products of breakdown in vacuum analyzed by using a mass spectrometer. The thermal stability in vacuo was comparable with that of polyphenylene, and that in oxygen was rather inferior to that of polytetrafluoroethylene. The higher molecular weight polymers gave as the main volatile degradation products silicon tetrafluoride and carbon dioxide, together with a carbonized residue containing virtually no fluorine.

Notes: The thermal and oxidative degradation of poly(phenylene sulfide) and perfluoropoly(phenylene sulfide) have been studied by a weight-loss method. The products of breakdown in vacuum have also been analyzed. The poly(phenylene sulfide) is more thermally stable in inert and oxidizing atmospheres than the fully fluorinated analog. The breakdown products can be accounted for by chain scission and transfer reactions. The formation of a large proportion of residue implies that crosslinking reactions play an important part in the degradation.

Notes: The effectiveness of compounds of the type as antioxidants in polystyrene has been examined and the results compared with those for some commercial high mol. wt. antioxidants. Effectiveness was found to depend not only on mol. wt., but also on molecular structure, concentration, and temperature of use.

Notes: have been prepared and their structure confirmed by elemental, infrared and mass spectrometric analysis. In view of their proposed use as antioxidants, solubilities in toluene were measured, and all the compounds were subjected to thermogravimetric analysis in atmospheres of air and nitrogen. The higher mol. wt. novolak materials undergo some form of condensation reaction at moderately elevated temperatures. This reaction could have some relevance to their properties as antioxidants and is also of interest with respect to the behaviour of novolak materials in the hardening of phenolic resins.

Notes: The effectiveness of compounds of the type as antioxidants in an ethylene/propylene (EP) copolymer has been examined and the results compared with those for some commercial high molecular weight antioxidants. Increasing the mol. wt. of the additive was found to improve its antioxidative efficiency and also to reduce the degree of interference with cure. Comparison with the results of earlier work1 showed that the efficiency of the antioxidants was affected by the nature of the polymer substrate.
