Description / Table of Contents:
On polymerization of caprolactam initiated by butylamine hydrochloride, semicyclic compounds containing terminal amidine groups in addition to linear and cyclic polyamides were detected by thin layer chromatography. Kinetic anomalies were observed: at low initiator concentrations the kinetic curves of polymerization are not monotonously changing, they decrease after the initial maximum rate, then an inflection will appear. The reaction time, at which the appearance of this inflection is observed, depends on the concentration of the initiator; no inflection appears at higher initiator concentrations. To explain these results a chain propagation mechanism was suggested in which after a transition of a proton from the terminal -NH⊕3 group to the lactam an addition compound is formed from both compounds. This can take part in two reactions: chain propagation after rearrangement or loss of water and formation of amidine. The amidine compounds formed initiate the polymerization of caprolactam. The rate of this reaction, however, is lower by an order of magnitude than in the case of amine salt initiation.
Notes:
